here are some stills from a film we just shot on the 100a... it's a 12-15min short film bout a poker game.

still doing a lot of tests with color correction/grading, just wanted to get some feedback.

should have a rough cut in about 3 weeks, i'll be sure to post the footage.

thanks,

Nice grabs. I did a poker based video as well...called HABIT, it's on my myspace page, check it out. Yeah, def needs some CC, more contrast. I actually took a poker class with James Mcmanus...ever heard of him? He's was one of the top 5 hold em' players.

Stills look really good, all the stereotypes are at the table, and I like it! :) Would love to play with the guy with the big sigar :)
Is there a story in your film or is it just some guys playing poker?
Keep up the good work and show some footage as soon as you can!

hey guys, thanks for the comments...

inspire84 - i watched your video man, it was real cool.. i'm actually going to be doing a similar effect with text as you did with all the suits near the end... after effects i assume? i may PM when i'm editing that part with a question or two.

settings:
24p, 1/48th shutter (except for a fight scene, where we boosted it to 250), master ped -5... shot some 60i for slow motion...
the rest were basically default settings, didn't have to tweak much to get the look i wanted...

there is a story, basically 5 cliched players, The Don, The Brains, The Eyes, The Con Man, and The Rookie, all come into one game with a specific strategy... ends with a twist.

lighting was the hardest, had 6 kino-knockoff lights mounted from a ceiling grid, that we had to raise and lower as we rotated around the table. getting enough light on their faces, while keeping light off the back drapes was difficult.

here are some stills my dad took as we filmed, just to show some of the lights/set.

---if you can see on the monitor, we were testing the framing for the overhead shot

Isn't McManus the one who wrote the book on the Binion murders and played in the world series as research and cashed? Stills are great by the way!

If you had the luxury of space, I'm sure you would've definitely move the actors and props away from the drapes as much as you can so that the background will look much darker (if that was what you wanted to achieve).

Are those grabs already colour corrected or raw? If it's raw, a little CC can get you what you wanted, no problems.

Perhaps when encountered with a situation like this in future, you might want to use fresnel lights instead of soft kinos for better control and separation between foreground and background. Using the in-built NDs and cutters to flag off spills will help too!

Yup that's him. He taught my literature of poker class, taught us all about the tells of the game and stories written about the game. Wild and crazy guy.

i woud like to know how the hell you hooked up those lights... i wonder what kind of equipment is needed ot hang lights from up top. not have any poles in frame...

thanks for the comments guys... yes, the stills are color corrected, magic bullet 'no 85'. i'm going to run it through color finesse in after effects to get a more customized look.

papa, we shot in a tv studio, so we had 15' ceilings and a 12' grid with studio lights... we hung the 6 flolights (cheaper, kino off brand) from the grid, and raised/lowered tem using pantographs for better control.. it was a real nice setup, but still a little hard when shooting low angles to keep the lights out of the shots...

would not have been able to finish otherwise, shot the whole 15 min short in 2 days, and probably couldn't have done it w/ lights on c-stands.
