Noga Arm + Marshall + Battery? Setup

Hi,

I have just purchased a Marshall 7'' HD monitor and V-mount Battery for my HVX. The problem is the monitor with the battery seems too heavy for the Noga arm to handle. The resulting configuration ends up either swiveling or flopping backward.

Just looking for any advice as to how I should position the monitor and arm?

Right now I have the noga arm attached to the hotshoe and folded in on itself with the monitor mounted upside down, for use with a redrock M2 adapter, and the battery attached. This configuration seems o.k. but I when I try and lean the monitor slightly back the whole thing just flops over due to the weight.

If I could tighten the Noga arm Joints I think that it would fix the problem but I can't figure out if that is possible. Any thoughts?

Should I just give up and remove the battery to another part of the camera and run a wire to the monitor? Do I need a better arm?

Any advice would be great.
Thanks

...I haven't had too much trouble with my Noga...but I've seen some suggest hanging the monitor from the Noga instead of mounting so the Noga holds it up...also, I've found that if I give the knob a good twist it holds pretty well......nothing like a good twistin' to your Noga knob, I always say....

Just curious...aren't you a little concerned about putting that much weight/stress on the camera's "hot shoe"?

If you dont need on your camera, Dont put it on it. Get a Tripod clamp, and or hire a PA to hold it. That is what they are for.

Get a rod system, preferably like the one from Zacuto.

No way would I put my marshall on the HVX's threads.

I use the Zacuto rod system with their battery plate. That way all the Noga arm has to support is the monitor itself. Works great.

Which Noga arm do you have, there are different sizes... Maybe yours is to small, you need the "Heavy Duty" arm. Mine is actually set up exactly like the pict above; with a V mount battery, you probably don't want to attach it to your camera handle, as it would be to much stress and could breack.

The arm that I have looks exactly like the one pictured in this thread.

I only used the hotshoe because I don't have any other way to connect it to the redrock rods that I have on the camera. Maybe that is my problem?

Then I could extend the arm as pictured instead of folding it over on the hotshoe. Also I would not want to break any part of this camera, for any reason.

What sort of rod clamp or attachment do I need to secure the noga to the redrock M2 rods? Does anyone have a pic of the setup using the noga with the redrock?

Can the joints at the top and bottom of the noga be tightened? They seem to be somewhat weak. It would be better if they had a tie down knob.

Thanks for all of the responses!

Not to be insistant, but the height of both Noga arms, the heavy duty and the regular one are actually very close, and would be hard to tell apart from the picture. I am asking because I have both sizes, and I can not imagine you monitor moving if you were using the Heavy duty noga arm.... The Zacuto mini mount should work fine with the RedRock rods.

If you are sure that it wouldn't move with the marshall, then I probably don't have the heavy duty noga arm. This thing moves all over the place and I can't imagine why an accessory that is suppose to hold expensive equipment would be so flimsy?

Like I said, they should have tie down knobs for all of the joints, not just the center one.

Maybe the fact that the battery adds so much weight, most people mount it separately and cable power in. I would prefer to just attach the battery but the arm I have obviously doesn't support that. Does anyone have a link to the heavy duty noga?

The Noga's work well for me . . . a little pricey (as is nearly everything else).
Took a little getting used to (for me), had the same "floppy" issues as the original poster.

Seems like somebody could develop a bracket (anyone remember the "Bracket1" ?), that does an equal or better job holding the Marshall for us HVX'ers than the Noga for a lot less money . . .

e.g., "mounts between the camera and the tripod plate", $35.00 . . . I'm in! (Where ya at Dakotapod?).

Alvise,

Your link re-directs me to put in a user name and password for the Redrock site.

Could you just post the name of the clamp or an alternate link?

Thanks

In addition to your question borax, I was wondering if it is possible and functional to attach the Noga onto the alternate tripod handle attachment thread? Most tripods have provision to attach the handle on the left or right side. Is this an alternative attachment point?

The issue that comes to mind is the balancing act during a tilt move, as with Noga mounting to the back of a rails extending beyond the back of the camera with a MiniMount.

wow ddent, nice setup, real nice man.

Is that a large battery behind the Marshall (reflecting back)? If so, you must have a lot of weight up there.

Thanks for the tip on the heavy duty Noga, that was a question floating around in my mind.

hey Borax,
Just thought you should know, if you already have the RedrockMicro base plate, check on the sides of it, it has a screw theaded hole on the side that the noga arm can attach to. No need to buy anything extra.
Hope it works.
