I've been testing my HVX and Brevis setup for a week or two and I'm learning some difficult lessons. Critical focusing is damn tough when even when stopped down a little - I've wasted a lot of shots not getting focus right - working off the lcd with focus assist is possible, but not easy. Might have to get the Marshall after all. Though part of my issue here may be due not having the Brevis set up properly.

Also learnt that it's a good idea to spend a fair chunk of change on your lenses, and do your research. My 24mm 2.8 Nikkor has nasty barrel distortion, so it's not going to get much use for master shots (or any shots). I haven't been able to nail focus with it either...everything looks soft regardless of f stop. More testing ahead. The 50mm is a 1.8 and seems to being a goob job for a cheapy, as is the 85mm 2.0 (both manual focus). I'm curious to know how much observable difference thare is between these and the primes which can run into the hundreds per lens. I picked up my 3 lenses at KEH.com as "bargains" for a total of $330. Oh yeah, even though they're rated as bargains they seem to be flawless (in terms of condition).

I'm also putting more consideration into exposure. Normally on the stock HVX if part of the frame was blowing I'd just put up with it (assuming my subject was correctly exposed). However to my eye out of focus blown out areas when using the adapter just look butt ugly. So I'm starting to consider compostion and filters more than before. Using an adapter is definately forcing me to lift my game.

What aperture for the HVX and Nikon lens setups? Might need some ND filters on the Nikon lens. May need more key/fill lights/bounce on the Fight Club stalker, so as to stop down and preserve bg. Stopping down may also provide more focus range. Marshall on the drool list here also. :D

No disappointment St. imo, the Brevis shots stand out from the stock, as always, personal preference is varied. Thanks for sharing.

I know, me too, typically nudity has to do with females upper or lower bodies, not men, otherwise we would be sited for walking around topless, or we would have to cover up our nipples with those pasties.

use cinegamma d, you need knee protection in the highlights. this will smooth out over exposure.

Hey Chris...good point about bringing up the light level on the subject. I guess it's the nature of the beast when working with small chip cameras - have to control your environment, or at least what you frame. I shot f4-5.6 on both lenses.

Timur...cine d is handy, but the dynamic range in most outdoor scenes makes it the equivalent of trying to put out a bushfire with a blanket (or something :))

St, if you are not doing run and gun, I will have an adapter friendly monitor setup for you to try soon, using an inverted Dell 2405 LCD and a component hd to DVI converter. Should be able to get noise free pixel for pixel monitoring. I also have a few tricks to try and calibrate it (best I can). :D

what i mean is, the Cine gamme D gives you additional Knee protection, this will help make the roll off to white smoother, and make the blown out parts look more natural.

False advertising here.. LOL. YOu might want to advertise this clip on the logo network or something like that... YIKES>

To quote J Seinfeld himself, not all viewers will be disappointed ... "Not that there's anything wrong with that or anything" :) Myself, I was crushed to see the partial nudity was, umm, that.

Don't the Dell 24" monitors have component inputs? Why would you need an adapter?

Bob

analog inputs: A/D conversion on the Dell is renowned for its bad quality. A lot of noise/crawling in the image. ok for focus imo. This conversion box should make a clean image, just calibration becomes another issue. Ultimately, I will get a broadcast monitor.
