Uncompressed for less - Reel-Stream discount for DVXUser members

How come I never get a reply from the Andromeda site? I'm really interested in this, but my questions are never answered...

I'm not clear on what SculptorHD is...

How do you edit the footage? Add gun shots and stuff like that? Can I do it through Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro 2?

Can I make the uncompressed footage 16:9 anamaphoric? or wide 2:35:1?

What about the whole 24p/ 23.976? 2:3:3:2 pulldown and 4:4:4? Does anything get tampered with when I put it in the editing software? Can I add gunshots and stuff like that?

Somebody please reply!

(Damn I ask a lot of questions :))

Hum...

There are a lot of posts about andromeda on this forum. Just try the search function...

And if u need more specific informations, just register on the Reel Stream forum and ask. http://forum.reel-stream.com/

For SculptorHD, I found the explanations on reel stream web site very clear :

overview :

Hello FutureDVXUser:

Our forum (http://forum.reel-stream.com) has tons of information, or you can feel free to email any questions directly to me at juan@reel-stream.com

To answer your questions,

SculptorHD is the Mac software which allows you to monitor, record and process the RAW uncompressed 4:4:4 data from the Andromeda system. You can view a simple illustrated step-by-step guide here:
http://www.reel-stream.com/GettingStarted.pdf

Namely, you can use any Intel Mac(or last generation G4) as an uncompressed 4:4:4 monitor, recording station and processing station. There are also many other features such as monitor histograms, reticules, lookup tables, etc.

Once the RAW material has been shot, you can export it using SculptorHD into standard image sequences(TIFFs, BMP, JPG, etc) or Quicktime Movies using codecs installed on your computer. Then you can drop it into any editing suite(and platform) that can handle the format you chose.

I should point out that Andromeda records pure uncompressed RAW, there is no lossless compression or other processing performed at all unless the user requests it.

With Andromeda, you get 24 pure uncompressed images per second, so there is no pulldown at all. You just drop the footage into the timeline, and pulldown only comes into the equation if you are rendering to a 60i format, in which case the editing suite takes care of it as usual.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Cheers,
Juan

JVC HD100- when are you going to support them?

We've looked at the JVC HD100, unfortunately the sensors do not have very good dynamic range, at least compared to what the current system yields. The current system on the DVX100 also yields comparable resolution. However, our next supported camera will likely be the HVX200, and from there we should be able to support other cameras such as the JVC using the same hardware. We are currently working on a new solution that can handle higher frame rates and pixel counts while still remaining very affordable.

One important point is that all these cameras have 1/3" sensors. There is a lot of focus on resolution and counting megapixels, but there is no escaping the fact that with increasing pixel counts comes decreased dynamic range(for a given sensor size). This is why the DVX yields such wide dynamic range with our system. The HVX doesn't quite get as much dynamic range, but certainly more than the JVC. The main advantages of an Andromeda system on the HVX when compared to the DVX are the increased framerate capability and an increase in resolution, from 1540x984 on the DVX to 1920x1080 on the HVX.

Juan-

This will probably belay my ignorance of how the technology works, but would you be able to capture the uncompressed images directly to the p2 cards? Or would an andromedized HVX still need to be tethered to a mac...?

Jaustere,

The system would not be able to record uncompressed directly to P2 card, among many reasons, the P2 cards are not capable of handling the bandwidth required for uncompressed recording, which is well above 100Mbps.

And I yours! Suits you very well. Prof. Calculus is definitely the type to come up with something like Andromeda :)

Thanks for the quick answer.

When you say increased framerate capability, what are you referring to here? That was a bit confusing.

I believe he's saying that we'd get 1920x1080 at all the variable frame rates the HVX is capable of.

Now that'd be neat. For a second I thought he meant more framerates out of 720p. Wouldn't have known how on earth that could happen.

Could be interesting.

Right, the frame rate coming out of the imager block is of course controlled by the camera settings. The uncompressed output would only be affected by the actual frame rate setting, other variations such as segmented frame encoding or pulldown would make no difference, because Andromeda always yields the complete RAW frame data with no need to conform to other standards.

Do note that with increasing frame rates comes increased bandwidth, so the hard disk requirements will vary accordingly. You may have a hard disk that can handle recording at 24fps 1920x1080 Uncompressed 4:4:4 14-bit, but may not handle the same mode at a higher frame rate. Since this is completely configurable, you only need faster media if you need to record that much data.

Juan

Yes, we should have some press releases during the first quarter of 2007. Our focus has remained on recording pure uncompressed full RGB(4:4:4) HD with wide dynamic range, high color precision at a very affordable price. The new architecture expands the range of practical shooting conditions, and provides support for other camera platforms, not just the HVX200. It also supports other interface technologies in addition to the new Andromeda interface.

As I mentioned before, all our tests seem to point out the DVX is still king in the dynamic range/latitude department when equipped with Andromeda, mainly because of the large surface area per pixel element. The HVX provides a native 16:9 ratio, increased resolution and frame rate capabilities.
