2.8ghz requirement for hdv - laptop?

Charli

cool little "title"
I was about to order the Vegas 7 yesterday until I saw the system requirements
of 2.8 ghz for hdv. I couldn't find a laptop with that configuration without
going through some type of customization for the notebook.

I suppose most Vegas users have a desktop for editing? Anyone using a
laptop? Would love to know which one you are using if you have the 2.8 ghz
required.

I am on a 6-month-old dell with a 1.68ghz centrino duo plus a gig of ram running vegas 7.

It is every bit as fast as my 2.8ghz P4(HT) in my desktop. I have played around with some HDV (I am mostly SD DV, however) and it is fine for me.

I use a AMD 64 3200 processor at 2ghz for my laptop and it works fine. But for HD you will need a lot of ram to render. I use 1.25gig is my laptop and it seems it barely is enough to render HDV. But for DV it is fine. But I do prefer using my dual core amd desktop for most of my editing anyways.

Charli > yes you are right ! most editors prefer and use desktop systems. There are so many factors that influence performance and usually editing and CG based applications etc are better suited to desktops. Mainly because video editing is a power hungry application and i dont think ull get true mobility for a long duration on a lappy unless ur probably hooked to power. Secondly i think most laptops have power/load handling mechanisms quite different from your desktop. Like they are designed to run the fan depending on how much your processor is heating up etc. They sometimes cut down on performance to give you better battery standby time. Because everything is so miniaturized. So if your planning to buy a system for editing then go for a powerful desktop. YOur price will be much cheaper and you can upgrade many parts at will etc which you cant do with a lappy. It will definitely phase out one day whereas a desktop,,,you can keep on updating. Faster ram. Better monitor. Add HDDs. All this you cant with a laptop and the damn thing will hog your battery if you try video editing on it. Sorry for such a long post but i made the same mistake 2 years back and just want you to know.

Smithy > how do you find ou the rating on an amd processor to say its 2 ghz ? ive found that most amds never rate their processors by ghz etc. Its only having a code number like the 3200 and it usually says 1.5 + or something like that. Very vague. Ive picked up many of their boxes and they never mention the ghz on it. How do you guys find this out ? and if you can tell me how can you tell me whats the highest in ghz that is available on an amd processor ?

Plainman-
Right click on "my computer" click properties. It should tell you there, if I remember correctly. Or you can just check it in your bios

Ramjet > lol. I was talking about when buying a new amd processor. lol. If i can pick up a new processor in my hands and right click my computer and find out about it then i wouldnt be on this forum. HAhahah. Anywayz just kidding. See where i have said you cant find them printed on the box etc also. Im talking about when buying a new amd processor, how does one find out what the ghz is ?

The vendor usually has the processor's speed rating (etc. 1.8Ghz, 2.0, 2.2, ...) listed either on the headings or in the specifications.
