Critique My Demo Reel

Keep it simple. Go through your "good footage" and take the BEST pieces. Then do this again and again till you have a great 30sec worth. Then edit together accordingly. Stick to one piece of music and make it match.

Thank you. I'm trying to stay away from it for awhile so I can approach it with a new eye. Because I'm not really seeing the problems that you guys are seeing. @ first I thought you were just being mean because we ALL KNOW how it could be better. But for the footage I have, I felt I did the best. I guess not. Now I'm trying to see it with that NEW EYE like you guys are so I can make the correct adjustments.

And how ARE they NOT properly fit and framed?

Take up photography for fun and learn the basics of it. It helps with framing. I did a bit if photography for fun before I decided to get a DVX and try out shooting videos/film clips. although I would be hesitant to compliment my own work, I do get compliments from people about the framing of my shots, and I think its because my background in photography helped in framing shots. Try it... anyway if you're interested (some self selling here - check out my vids at http://borgkingkong.blogspot.com)

I suggest you read, Film Art: An Introduction by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson. Read all 500 pages of that book once over and you will understand immediately all the criticisms you're recieving. I guarantee you read that book from front to cover once, your next reel will be a thousand times better than your first (no joke).

Yah, I'm a designer from Windsor, (right across from detroit), I film alot over there with my dvx, and well to give you an honest opinion on this demo reel, it had potental, but was all just smacked together, most didn't look like it was even shot on the dvx, or at least at 60fps, most shots weren't even nice to look at, but with time it could get alot better, get that dvx on true 24p, get your buddys to drive you around downtown dt, and go down woodward or gratiot, quality footage, lock those doors, and shoot, 50 cent/8mile type footage. Looks awesome.

Try it, :P

How do you know I'm from Detroit

dvxuser has this big map of the world made out of a LED grid. Every time you post, the LED in southeast Michigan beeps red two times. I guess Drew had his eye on the grid last time you posted. You better watch out Tommie Green from HIGHLAND PARK, we're watching you....and up to no good!

:( o Any film makers in Detroit that want to film together?

Probably not with me though since I'm the laughing stock of DVXUSER.

you should look into getting some cheap hosting with decent bandwidth so you can host your own webpage and upload your video footage at a higher quality. i pay like $20 for 4 months of web hosting. youtube is a joke to anyone serious about filmmaking.

as far as your reel, i stopped watching after about 45 seconds, the music was bad (and i like rap) and it didnt match the footage. you wouldve been better off with just the origianl version of diamonds are forever by Kanye West. the footage didn't really say anything to me in terms of what you were trying to accomplish. the transitions seemed a little amateurish.

my advice would be to check out some good books on cinematography and possibly something on directing.

after 5 pages of people telling you what you should do and what was wrong with your reel you've already proved you have thick skin and that you're open to critiscm...all you need to do now is polish your stuff, make it tight and blow people away the next time around.

stay up
