Mark and Ted's Excellent Adventure in Drama

OMG! I am STILL laughing at that Jack. And that giant drink in the cockpit is just the best.

And I let you all in on a quick story. Kevin ordered a ladder in our grip rental and of course, Mark was quick to say that we HAD to get a shot of me with the ladder (for fairly obvious reasons for those who know...)

Well, the ladder just happened to be set up in front of the blue screen and was the best lit place and I decided, well... let's grab that shot!

Afterwards, I thought about what a mistake that would be to post in front of all you photoshop hounds! I can ONLY IMAGINE what and where and who I would end up with if I posted a photo of me with a ladder in front of a perfectly lit blue screen!

Nice one, Jack.. That is JUST THE BEST!!!

(L-R) Tim Hyten (Slimothy), Mark Johnson, Kevin Halverson (khmuse) and Blaine Golden.

Oh, and I just want to say what a GREAT GUY Tim (Slimothy) is. Wow. Couldn't be a more stand-up dude! I had such a great time working with him tonight!

I feel like the luckiest guy on the planet!

What a great time! A great crew for what we hope to be a great film!!!

(okay.... I'm off to go buy MORE BEER!)

please tell me you guys got some moving crane shots from the side... that would be freakin' cool!

Yeah, we had the camera on the Kessler and we did a real nice crane up that starts beneath the wing so you can see these subtle movements of the control surfaces and the shot continues to reveal the cockpit. With some subtle foreground movement of cloud wisps it should really sell well in conjunction with the actual footage of the Zlin we've shot in the desert.

Now might be an apropos time to post a couple of images from our trip to the desert during Ted's last visit to California. The shots we are getting this week will be closeups and mediums that we will intercut with live footage and some CG as well. We're been very fortunate to be able to get some wonderful footage of Rob under controlled conditions that should edit very nicely into the final film.

BELOW: Ted took this photograph as I caught Rob with the HVX passing at low altitude near a desert mountain range:

BELOW: Ted got this wonderful shot as we shot Rob flying his Zlin-50 at a little-used runway outside of a place called Nine Palms California:

Lighting setup information:

InTheHangar.jpg

Despite looking fairly elaborate, this is a pretty straight forward setup. The chroma key blue screen was lite with a pair of 2k Zip Softlites to about 32 footcandles. The aircraft surface was lite with a 2k Fresnel through a 6' x 6' silk at about 30 degrees from the camera line. I also used a 650 Fresnel and a smaller silk to bring up the cowl area. The trailing edge of the left wing was a bit too boring and didn't read as if there was a daytime sky above, so I punched it up with a Lowel Caselite 4 bank. For Rob (our pilot) I used a Dedo 150W head for a hair light and another Dedo for an eye/fill light. Yet another Dedo head served as our "Sun" source. I pushed the key up by just over 1/2 stop above our chroma key fabric so that I could be reasonably certain that we would get a nice look to the aircraft's canopy.

The HVX does a nice job with its deeper color space and I see that Jack has already made some interesting use of our frame grab (I have to admit, that In-N-Out composite made me laugh out loud when I saw it).

We were a bit power limited at this hangar and we ended up pulling another 20 Amp feed from another hangar to feed all of our sources. I would have loved to have a couple of 5k Zips, but we just didn't have the power to spare (I really wanted well over 64 footcandles for the fabric). After reviewing a bit of the footage from night one at Mark's and Ted's hotel, I am pretty confident that we got footage that will key really well. I would have loved to be able to shoot Rob's plane on a big cyc where we could have gotten a lot of camera movement, but considering we rolled the grip truck in, moved the aircraft around, lite and shot our scenes and were out of there in under 6 hours, I can't complain one bit.

Thanks guys for a great first night and looking forward to tomorrow!

Kevin, Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us all here.

I will say that it was the INFORMATION that drew me to dvxuser. I was overwhelmed by the amount of info that one can obtain here. It is what made me join and continue to visit.

Now, of course, I have found friendship and kinship... a place to joke and have fun.

But I love it when genuine information graces these threads.

Thank you for sharing. It was so amazing watching you work tonight! I am getting such a great education as we make this film!

Kevin,

Thanks for sharing about the lighting set up!

JDS,

GREAT PIC! LOL! Nice work - they don't call it and and out for nothing! :)

Ted & Mark,

I enjoyed the video clip as well as the pictures. Thanks! Even though I have not been posting much, this has been a fun thread to follow. :)

OK, first I have to comment that I notice that Ted is posting at 2AM...

...didn't I tell you boy's not to stay up all night and play on your computers?? I had better not catch you yawning on set tonight!

Glad the lighting info is useful, I will try and keep posting more as we progress through the shots.

Wow guys, wow. I can't wait to see this.

Great lighting setups Kevin, thanks for all the info.

I think I'm going to get some In-N-Out for lunch today... mmmmm.... Double Double.

Kyle,

Latest flight out from KC Thursday that gets into Ontario leaves at 6:30 p.m. You are on that flight getting in at 9:10. Sorry you have to come so late as you are missing some cool stuff. Anyway, see you Thursday at 9:10.

Mark

I am too! These bts pictures are really making me discouraged! I want to be out there! Unfortunately, the shoot just jumped one week ahead of me and I couldn't make things work. Mark, I don't expect a hugely exciting trip this time out there, but I think it will be great to just see California from an insider's perspective. I took a vacation out there this summer with the family, but this time it will be different.

Best of luck to everyone on this shoot, I wish I could be out there! I thought that this was just going to be rehearsal and that the principal shooting was in January... sorry if my planning didn't roll with everyone else's =)

Anyways, I love what I'm seeing on the thread and with every picture I get more and more jealous! Keep rocking!!
-Kyle

Well, I think it looks like crap and I can definitely wait until this comes out!

Ok, just kidding...please don't shoot

Seriously, I think those shots are looking great, just didn't want to jump right into the love-fest

without hassling you guys a little bit :)

I think when this film is done everyone will be doing this:

Keep it up, looking forward to more

C'mon, Ted, I want to see that shot of you on the ladder...:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

post it...post it...post it...post it...

I think Ted is a little worried what people might do with a shot of him on a ladder in front of an easily keyed background. Seeing that it took less than an hour for Rob and his plane to end up in the drive through line at In-N-Out, who knows what could happed with him on a ladder?

Gotta run to Hollywood but will see everyone this afternoon back on set!.

Brandon, man, that's a good point! Don't get me wrong, this trip is going to totally blow away anything I'd be doing over my break in Lincoln, Nebraska. However, I don't want Mark or anyone to feel as though they need to entertain me because it's my own fault I'm coming out later than everyone else.

I think we will get work done, and I will spend time learning my duties on the set and just having a good time talking and driving from place to place. It's going to be awesome, and I have no doubt about that.

That's all I meant!
