Of course, Mark will wield his magic and drop in some beautiful sky image.

More to come!!!

(oh, by the way... isn't Kevin's lighting just great! I think that we'll be able to talk him into a brief "lighting breakdown!")

Thanks for you patience! :)

...i cant believe i didnt notice this thread before. Mark, can you do me a favor and tell John Herman that I said hi, and wish him good luck out there. Looks like you guys are up to making a pretty tastey short. cant wait to see it!
Do you mean John Hermann? Our actor? I'd be happy to pass on a hello for you!

Thanks for the comments!

Hey, forgot to mention, yes, nice lighting Kevin... love the backlight on the right side of the cockpit... gives off that feeling of sunlight from behind the plane. nice.

Kyle man... what's up? Did you get to check out the pix of me passing over you in the air? Dude, I was waving and everything!

Sorry that I am going to be missing you out here. I CANNOT believe that your trip to CA doesn't overlap my visit. Really bums me out.

Have a great trip in case I don't get a chance to tell you (since you are so busy with final exams.... which, "good luck" on them!)

Hey Ted, good luck this evening! Talk to you tomorrow!
Hey there, Brandon. Great talking with you through PMs. Looking forward to seeing you on Wed.

And have an In and Out burger and... what was that? "animal style fries" with you!

Sounds good!

Hey Mark, a quick tech Q for ya. Why did you choose a blue screen over green?

Brandon,

The choice of a blue screen was a no-brainer in this case. Most of the shots will have the plane composited against moving cloudscapes/skyscapes so that the natural environment of the shot is a background of blue. When you pull keys you often get "spill" from the color of the background that becomes difficult to pull out. In this case, with a blue sky, when we have blue "spill" it reads as natural reflection from the sky. Had we used a green screen you would see the green as unnatural but you don't see anything off from blue reflections or spill/bleed in a situation where the sky is the main background element.

Of course! DUH! LOL. Thanks Mark, that makes complete sense now! Totally makes sense. Thanks!

Hey Neil,

Your dolly is on the set! Today, though, it became the Craft Services table top! Thanks for sending me those clips for the handle awhile back. I keep the handle stowed underneath it using those. We'll be using it for a tracking shot later in this shoot. Its been a great tool and I recommend it all the time to people who see mine.

Mark

Well, I'm off to sleepyland... I am happy I stayed awake to hear about the first night of shooting! Good luck again tomorrow... Ted and Mark, I'll be talking to ya in the AM... peace everyone!

This will surely replace Mark's Avatar image one day...

Photo is of Mark sitting in as at stand-in for our pilot, Rob Harrison. Obviously, we didn't want our star talent to have to sit there for 20 minutes while we got the final touches on the lighting right! And of course, Mark was a true pro!

Wanted to post another full frame from the HVX. Having a DP who knows what he's doing sure helps immensely. This is from a sequence in which Kevin was making subtle movements to a Dedo that caused the "sun" on the canopy to bloom in a simulation of movement in flight. Pretty cool stuff.

I believe Kevin will post more information about the lighting setups on the thread when he gets some time (and some sleep).

By the way, when we shot we had Rob (Eric) tell us what nominal instrument settings would be for the flight conditions so we can alter the dials in post accordingly.
