DAY BY DAY - 720p, P&S Teknik, Panavision Super Speed II

Okay... the blacks are too crushed and the colors suck... but here's at least one full-frame (as cropped to uberwide...)

Err... Photoasshat seems to constrain the image size, anyway. Damnit.

Whew!

What a hell of a few days!

First off, we had an exterior shot we wanted to to at sunrise, but our Producer happened to sleep in (for an extra 3 hours until our AD had to drive to his place and pound on his door... he wasn't answering his cell at all). We couldn't shoot because he had the children's costumes we needed.

So, we missed the light I wanted to shoot in, and the Orlando skies weren't being kind to me with any cloud cover. We had direct sunlight in the hot spots and full shade in the darks... and it looked horrible. Luckily, I upped the master pedistal in the camera and exposed somewhere in the middle... hopefully we can work with it.

There has to be a life lesson in there somewhere. I am not certain if it is not to shoot too many consecutive 12s and have everyone dead tired or if it is to never trust wardrobe to a producer? That sucks. Standing around watching your light turn to crap and knowing that you could have gotten your shots must have been frustrating.

After the Producer showed up and we shot the dolly exteriors, we shot inside the bakery and finished in there with a different lighting setup. I thought this would be fine (as it was a different day in the script) until I found out that we tacked on another "sunset" shot that we SHOULD have gotten when the lighting was the same the day before. For some reason, we didn't have time to get an insert of a man sitting in a chair... ? It sucked... it wasn't lit the way it was at all, and it won't cut together. Still, my guys say that they can color correct it to make it work. I doubt that, but I'll let them do their thing.

After that, lots of things had gotten changed around and I got passed at our Script Supervisor / Continuity person. She wasn't on set every day, and I wasn't consciously thinking much about continuity (because hell... we had someone and it was her JOB). So we realized we had 2 MAJOR screwups... luckily, we figured them out on set and changed shots accordingly so that now they will hopefully cut together. Either way, it was a major crisis averted... but still stressful.

I have been blessed with having a great scripty on some of my shoots. The ones that are good are worth their weight in gold. So nice to be able to trust these details to someone else and know that they will get it right. Its great to be able to ask a question like "which hand did the (character) use to pick up that..." from a shot you did days earlier and get back a great answer like "...they used there left hand, just after their second line of dialog...". I think that too many people undervalue the a scripty and don't fully appreciate it until they are in post and then its a bit too late.

On top of that, on the way home traffic was slow and as the Director and I are passing by, he goes, "Ooo, an accident. Oh shi*, that's Erin!"

Some douche hit our 1st AD's car in the middle of the highway. Luckily she was ok, but we stopped at the scene to be double sure.

Damn, you did have a hell of a few days there!

i haven't been reading the posts, i've just been looking at the pics.

what aspect ratio are you shooting, 2.78? (Ben-hur).

Thanks.

2.55... a little excessive, I know.

So much info, and so many great pics, BUT Come on lets see some Dallies.

I've promised my Director that I wouldn't post clips until he had something edited... sorry... it'll be a while...

It's been a while, I know... but if you guys are interested, I will soon have my DP Reel up (I'll start a new thread)...

I'm not "supposed" to post actual footage from Dearheart's Bakery, but I will post my Reel... and some of THAT footage just happens to be from Dearheart's Bakery.

Keep an open eye... I'll title it something obnoxious like: DREW SUPPA'S REEL.

Just FYI.

Comments will be welcome!

I really was impressed by the HVX. From the moment I started playing with it, it had professional-level tweaking abilities built in to a prosumer (Sony invented that damn word) camera body.

In reviewing the footage, the 720P footage has some minor issues with pixelating things, especially in gradients (from light to dark in pinks and blues). Granted, I turned up the sharpness and turned down the master pedistal... so that had a lot to do with it, but we wanted a clear image from the camera body itself so that we could fully use the Panavision lenses' attributes.

The Dearheart's Bakery footage stands out in my reel from the rest... mainly for the lighting and costuming, but the camera really takes on a personality of its own... I really like it. Not enough to buy, but I like working with it.

I'm actually planning on selling all of my gear (for the move to LA in a few months) and investing in a really nice set of O'Connor sticks (and head) and if I am fortunate enough to come anywhere near one, that Red camera... if the damn thing exists.

Is there a "for sale" section on this site? I've got a $1700 Bogen Manfrotto set of sticks, Canon GL2 and Mattebox, and a $700 jib that I want to sell.

I'll be back in Orlando in mid-February (I'm in Jacksonville right now on a shoot, and then from there I shoot in St. Augusting (I hope.. it's f'ing beautiful there). Hopefully I'll get to finish my reel, compress it, and upload somewhere so that I can post on it here for all to see (and bash)!

Can you give us a direct link to your reel in this thread? I would love to see your work on this and your other projects.

The video quality of YouTube sucks... I'm looking into hosting elsewhere; currently, MySpace is winning. Insane, I know.

I'll see what I can do here in a minute.
