Another demo reel for your perusal

I uploaded it to youtube so the compression makes it not as clean as it will be when on disk or my website that I am working on. But it's close enough for an initial critique. So let me know what you think. I'm looking to improve it so feel free to be critical.

My Reel

Thanks,

Real quick reply/impression. Right from the bat, before the visual was even on. The music immediately put me in an uptempo/joking kinda feeling. But then it confused me with some of the imagery, because some of it looked like some drama. Have you reconsidered the musical choice?

i second that. music is conflicting w/ some of the imagery..which isn't always a bad thing, but in this case i feel it should go with it.
my 2 pesos.

I agree...also the fencing shots seemed sort of out of place and had no real aesthetic worth in my opinion

The music is really wrong for the piece. It also seems a bit disjointed. Drama, action, drama action. Also the fight is not a good choice. It isn't a very good fight. I think it was the shutter speed that made it look weird. That and the fact that at least one of the punches looks like a miss.

I agree that the music put me off in places, although sometimes the footage seemed relevant to the lyrics (jumpin' and dodgin'). The fight was good (nice use of a high shutter speed), it just didn't sell because it had no sound effects. A lot of the fencing shots I would ditch because the composition isn't so great--particularly regarding the wide at the end, which could have been much better.

Just my $.02, as the kids say.

Here's my thoughts: Music doesn't fit the reel IMO. You only have footage from three seperate projects, which isn't bad, but maybe make the reel a little shorter... So as not to be as obvious about it. Love your stuff man, great work.

Thanks guys. Really useful critiques. I'm changing the music, dropping the fencing and taking out the fight. Not sure how to mix drama and action in a reel though without being too obvious about the divide. Like Brandon said, I am not working with too much yet so I can't group the like clips together as they are from the same projects.

Maverickstunts, thanks for the comment. Damn your credits are impressive! I am an action movie fan and will definitely be improving my action direction and camerawork. I know that there were problems with my first short in that respect and I definitely learned a lot from them. Do you do any fight choreography?

Thanks again. I'll have a revised version soon.

Alex

I liked the visuals, but i echo some of the comments about the music not matching. The pacing might need a bit of work too. I didn't really find much wrong with the fight scene though - looked pretty good to me except the last punch

Does anyone have a good example of music matching a reel? I am looking through my collection trying to find something that I think matches or at the least doesn't put people off. And if anyone has a suggestion for something they think would work well with the clips I have, I'd be happy to give it a shot.

Not sure what the rules are for using other people's music, but I have a cool song I think might work. PM me with your email address.
