Can you upgrade the FS-100 Hard Drive?

Been searching on here, and couldn't find a thread of this being discussed. But I was wondering if one is able to open up the FS-100 and install a 160GB 5400RPM Hard Drive to replace the 100GB model? Any suggestions?

I don't see why not. I'm not an expert but, a drive is a drive and if you can
switch out an ipod drive then why not a FS-100?

that's what I was thinking! But I don't have/own one yet...just wanted to know if it was possible and how easy it may be...I'm assuming there might be some "special" formatting needed as well?

Might want to start with Focus.

This question, I believe, has been asked before, and the answers have been uniformly no.

The FS100 is NOT an iPod, and the interface is significantly different.

Well I'm assuming you would replace the HD already inside the FS-100 box...so everything should be the same...if they are using an off the shelf drive that is inside..

hey. they are using a Mitsubishi 5400rpm drive. I was actually surprised since I thought they would have chose a 7200rpm drive. I'm not sure about the formatting, but that's what I saw. I guess I should have written the model number.

for people who have the fs-100 storage, are you able to unscrew the casing to get to the Hard Drive? I'm not asking you to actually do it (unless you want to :) ) but just want to know if there are screws or if it sealed similar to an ipod and need a putty knife or something to open it. Thanks

I remember seeing a post somewhere where someone replaced a drive on their FS4 and it worked fine. I think they went from 40G to 80G, using the same family of drives (Hitachi).

Definetly screws. easy to dissassemble. and change the drive. not sure if just changing it out will work with their software. ( i suppose it will)

This is absolutely not recommended and will void your warranty. Unfortunately, not all hard drives are equal (even from the same manufacturer). The drive used in FS-100 was specifically selected for its performance and characteristics. Operation of FS-100 cannot be guaranteed with different disk drives.

There has been some horror stories of users swapping to different disk drives and having all sorts of problems.

As a retired IT Engineer, I can assure you that Matt is correct, not all hard drives are created equal, not by a long shot.

Even with a drive of the exact same model #?

Thanks

So who is going to take one for the team and let us know how it worked out? For the almost $2000 it cost, I'm a little cautious with everything I do wtih mine...

1 - Get 50 people to put in $40 each
2 - Buy one FS-100
3 - Take it apart
4 - Put in new big fat drive
5 - Test
6 - Conclude!

If it breaks, then you've only lost $40.

I have an even better idea! Wait a couple more weeks for us to work out the kinks in the 3.0 beta version, pay $39 for the 3.0 upgrade, and record Native mode, giving your much more recording time on the FS-100, without voiding your warranty, or flushing $1900 down the toilet!

With the new 3.0 "native" recording, the FS-100 should be able to hold more than four hours of 720/24p. A significant increase in functionality, with no hardware modification necessary.
