Joe Dante's "The Screwfly Solution" which was shot on the HVX is airing on Fri 12/08 on Showtime.

I can't wait to see the HVX in action, maybe Dante will redeem himself after the TERRIBLE episode he last directed (Homecoming).

terrible? I really liked homecoming, I saw it in a huge screen in the sitges film festival, seated just behind of Joe Dante :)

Very interesting. I'll have to record the HD broadcast. :)

btw, I thought Homecoming was, if nothing else, somewhat provacative.

Anyone see Ernest Dickerson's "The V Word"? I really enjoyed it.

I enjoyed "The V Word" as well, probably my favorite episode so far.
As for Homecoming, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I REALLY disliked that episode. I think filmmakers should keep their politics to themselves. I think Dante's episode was one-sided, overly-simplistic, and overly melodramatic. I'm sorry if I am really down on this film, but it actually made me angry. Anyways, sorry about the mini-rant.

Did not like Homecoming either. This season has been very entertaining. My favorite so far is Sounds Like, directed by Brad Anderson.

Homecoming was bad, but it wasn't all Joe's fault. The writing just was brain-dead. There's something about the speed of TV that sucks any character development right out of a story....

I don't have cable, so I have bought EVERY episode (Masters of Horror) released on DVD, thus far, EXCEPT for HOMECOMING. When I watch horror (or anything else really) I want horror... I don't want simplistic, anti-war, propoganda DISQUISED as horror.

I'm so pissed about this, by the way. I've been wanting to adapt The Screwfly Solution since I was in high school. It's been pretty much untouched since the '70s, now all of a sudden when I actually have the resources to do it, Joe Dante gets his hands on it. Grrr. He better not **** it up.

No need to apologize on the rant. Obviously this is the worng place to debate politics
and film directors but, I have to make this one point about 'Homecoming.' In an odd
way this film is going to serve as a sign of the times and carries the weight and
anger of somany unhappy Americans against the war in Iraq. As far as keeping
personal politics out of one's films I think that's a total misunderstanding and limiting
vision of films to begin with. 'Homecoming' is completely one-sided and overly-simplistic
but, the same can be said for our president. Anyways...

I'm curious how much CC is going to be shown on the HVX footage this FRI?

I think filmmakers should keep their politics to themselves.

Seriously? What you're basically saying is that films shouldn't express beliefs. What would a film be worth, then? I guess you'd be left with mostly a lot of trite romantic comedies, and most of the great films of history would have never existed.

Ooooh, the metal lock on this thread is about to drop - I can feel it! :)

I suspect it's overly political films that G-man was really referring to. There's nothing wrong with creatively and artisticly interjecting personal beliefs, opinions and emotions into a film. After all, that's what it is all about! But someone like Dante in "Homecoming" executed it terribly. No subtlety at all. I mean, c'mon! Could it have been any more melodramatic?! I think "obvious" films like these, regardless of which side of the political coin they fall, are just lame.

I don't want to debate actual politics here. No reason why the thread should be in danger. I just think it's ridiculous to say that politics should stay out of films. There's a very fine semantic line. What constitutes "politics"? Can't any belief become political? Isn't Network a political movie? Isn't Bridge on the River Kwai? Isn't pretty much every movie worth a damn?

I agree with the argument that people should try to make their movies GOOD, which seems to be the real point. I haven't actually seen Homecoming.

I am very interested to see this as well. An episode with a 2+ million dollar budget (canadian) shot entirely on the HVX-200...by DOP Attilla Szalay.
I can anticipate the cinematography will be an inspiration to us all...and what can be done with the HVX-200!
Cheers,

Brian Broz

Oh man! Can I order Showtime for just one night? Darn this HBO package... darn it to Heck!

Yeah, but so long as nobody takes the bait... come on, it shouldn't be hard to have a debate about the nature of filmmaking without turning it into personal attacks on peoples' beliefs. There are far too many thread closings around here as it is.

No offense to "Inexistance," but his previous post was clearly in violation of forum rules. :) Not that he's necessarily a troll, but is that not a "troll-like" comment?? Ah, well, whatever. I don't really care much. Just thought I'd point it out. :)

Anyway . . . yeah, we can debate without going "there." It's all good . . .

I too hope that Dante makes a good flick this time around too. Is there any
BTS stuff on the web anywhere? I'm curious about their setup with the HVX.

It's politcal satire and what Joe Dante states...

"If you're going to code the message, which is the way horror movies have always done it, that's fine, but it's not going to reach an audience like a movie that's overt, and this is not exactly subtle," says Dante. "Somebody has to start making this kind of movie, this kind of statement. But everybody's afraid—it's uncommercial, people are going to be upset. Good, let them be upset. Why aren't people upset? Every minute, somebody's dying in this war, and for nothing. To establish a religious theocracy in Iraq? It doesn't seem to me quite worth it."

No offense taken DC, pm'ed ya!
