Any tips on going HVX-200 straight to drive?

I'm wondering: in case my laptop malfunctions on a shoot, are there any things I need to know about downloading recorded P2 cards on the camera to a drive over FireWire 400? (I have 2 500GB G-Raids.) I've read what it says in the manual, but is there anything about this process they DON'T tell you, or isn't clear?

For instance, in the manual it says this process might not work if there are too many partitions. (I haven't partitioned my drives so that shouldn't matter...)

It will totally format your drives, so make sure they're absolutely positively empty before you start. And you can only offload 15 times before a drive is full of partitions; if you're using 4GB cards that means you can only take advantage of 60GB per drive, that's all.

barry-

i did not know that the limitation is on the number of partitions (15) and not the amount of data stored on the drives.

so w/a 4 gig card= 4gig x 15 partitions = 60 gig on a drive
so w/a 8 gig card= 8gig x 15 partitions = 120 gig on a drive.

so 120 gig external drive is all that is necessary before the drive needs to be dumped.

now the "dumping" of the 60 gig or 120 gig of material on the drive could then be dropped and dragged to the original poster's 500 gig g-raids and the process can then be started all over? do i have it right?

as always, thanks for sharing your thoughts.

be well

Yes, then you can start all over again, your first step being to re-format the drive again.
