Check out the trailer for my new action film shot entirely with my DIY adapter

constructive feedback:

The sound was not on par with the visuals. The effects recorded in the beginning sound plastic and tinny, you may want to foley some things and add bass (make me believe that gun is made out of metal). The protagonist's delivery "I've already killed this guy" is hard to make out and too nonchalaunt for the mood. The timing needs tweaking to help accentuate each feeling you're going for. As it is now, the song at the last half didn't work for me. I wanted to hear the brutal sounds of this guy fighting, the contrast between visual and sound was not enough. Last, it always bugs me when the title comes out of nowhere. I like trailers where by the time you see the title, you could almost guess what it would be. Seeing the title should make sense ("ah, that's a good name for that"), but the way your trailer is now, I see no reason for it to be called Parabellum besides it being a somewhat cool sounding word involving guns. The compression also needs fixing, it's really pixelated now.

I think this piece has a lot of potential and there are realistic improvements you can make to enhance it. I'm not saying you should recast or anything (how is that ever helpful), but you should definitely take another stab at the post-production to make it as good as it can get. The trailer was succesful in that it made me want to see the movie.

wow, great stuff man

as to some of the previously stated comments, i agree about the title, it does kind of come out of no where, and the rest of the trailer is not that punchy, so it feels slightly out of place.

Great cinematography.

The reason I chose to name the movie "Parabellum" is that it means "ready for war" in latin... perhaps I can start the trailer with a title that shows something dictionary-definition-esque? What are your thoughts. Im' new to this trailer cutting thing and want it to look good.

The visual style (grainy) is cool... but I agree with the audio comment and I don't quite like the song at the end either.

I still don't understand why talented filmmakers chose inane violence as the subject matter. Guns, guns, blood, guns and more blood. What purpose does it serve? Why not show 10 people all lined up on a wall and simply shoot each one in the head, show the blood and brains hit the wall, then roll the credits. Put that talent to good use and make a film that moves the viewers emotions without using violence, blood and guns.

Anybody can "whip out a gun" and "blow somebody away" it's been done a million times over. Try whipping out some "dialog" or story line with depth.

I'm only stating my opinion here because I see great talent in this filmmaker's ability.

Uh oh here we go

Its a trailer man! Its supposed to exploit the exploitable, advertise what people want to see-- and people love violence and good looking women. I'm sorry-- but thats how this business works. But to satiate your concerns, there's a love story in the film. I'm releasing it on youtube in about 3 weeks and I hope you enjoy it. If you're concerned about my interest in violence-- check out these two very violent gigs I shot this year:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyz-fb37zL0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZuv04c5dPo

Ok, the next one is violent-- but it has a message (it was done for a church on a 200 dollar budget)

Btw, thank all of you for all your constructive criticism. I wouldn't be asking if I thought the trailer was ready.

pimpdaddy: there's plenty of room in the world for movies about all types of things. There's people who hate action movies, and people who hate art movies. You shouldn't criticize someone's subject matter. I don't think its the content that counts at all, it's the delivery of the material. Did you study at Boston University or something? I know the teachers there are all into that "guns ruin movies" mumbo jumbo.

Anyway to address the title...I think narration could help, something where the title is spoken, or maybe even its latin defition is spoken. experiment, just try to make a stronger bond. looking forward to the movie.

I'm sorry but this reply is useless. He wanted constructive critisism on his trailer, not a paragraph on what you think he shouldn't have shot in the first place. There are other sections here that you can rant in.

Everyone has already given some good suggestions, but I think your choice of music at the end could be more impactful if it hadn't already been used so many times (Powderkeg, Man on Fire, etc.).

Cool look though

That's not your opinion. That's you forcing your way/choice of filmmaking onto another "talented" filmmaker. If he wants to write and shoot something about the president getting kidnapped by Ninjas, and the only people that can save him are two crude, rude, and BAD DUDE(s) ((Ten dollars for the person who gets the reference)) then let him.

You keep going on and making your heartfelt movies, and he can go on and blow things up. Two different filmmakers, two different worlds.

I get the reference, but it should be you who is awarded $10 for bringing it up in the first place. Hats off to you sir, and a big double

Thanks!

Thanks!

Hahaha Thanks for coming to my rescue guys. I hope you guys like the final product- I wish there was a way to share rough footage without it leaking out.

I'm amazed someone else got that. Rats off to you. We now return you to your originally scheduled thread.

Just watched the trailer and really liked it...looking forward to seeing the whole film! Love the Latin title as well. I took three years of Latin in high school. Always amazes me how influential it is in our culture...especially for a "dead" language!

I liked it alot, the grainy look is working really well. I love the cut of the action, it is really intense!

IMHO it was better without the definition of the title. But, if you choose to keep the definition I would remove the "Latin:" part. It just comes off as strange to me.

Great work! I can't wait to see more :)

I liked it alot, man..
Did you fix the audio for the Voice over in the second cut, because it does sound slightly fuller, which is good.

Also, no one's addressed this so i figured I would... hoe did you make the adapter? Was it some sort of DIY one from DVX?

Matt
