How to tape audio for a live music concert

Hi guys, I'm having a really hard time with getting clear audio that doesn't sound distorted on my DVX100A. I have a decent Audio Technica shotgun mic I'm using. This is only happening when I'm filming very loud live music.

I tried turning the input to line instead of mic, but got absolutely nothing. I then just tried turning the levels down but it just made the sound distorted but quieter.

Any ideas?

Hmmmmm. Digital has its limits. Band too loud? Audio recording is an art all by itself. Bad audio cable? Low battery on mic? Dammaged mic? Mic too close to source?
Try a line out from the mixing board, or use camera mic.

My cameras not here with me as I type, but shouldn't you be switched so that both recording channels are picking up your shot gun mic and 1 levels dial set for loud and the other for normal to average sound levels?

I'd go shotgun to one channel, on-board mic to the second channel and manually ride the levels. Still, a mixdown from the board to the camera is better - perhaps you can rig a wireless input from a transmitter at the board.

Best, in my opinion, would be the first option for reference audio only with post synchro from a board-fed double-system recording.

I agree with overland. Use the onboard for sync reference, and get yourself a multitrack recorder, and feed it from the house board. That then gives you the ability to bring the overpowered instruments down, and give you cleaner vocals.

Yeah, thanks for the suggestions guys. I agree that a master out from the board would be best, but that's not always available in xlr form. I haven't tried the on board mic yet. Think I'll give that a shot and try and get the board feed whenever I can.

Thanks again!

They do make 1/4" to XLR you know, and just try to tell me that house board doesn't have at least 1/4" out :)
