Alon, here's a test I did back in May... ultimately, uncompressed recording is only worth doing in difficult or marginal matte conditions... you CAN get good results with the on-board recording.

http://www.imageshoppe.com/HVX_bluescreen2.html

Since then I've learned that you want to shoot either DVCPRO 50 (SD, and equal to Digibeta) or DVCPRO 100 1080 on the HVX. For a variety of reasons, the HVX's 1080 gives less compression on any given frame compared to recorded 720p.

Regards,

I'm responding from cell,Lighting and even background is much more critical on 1080i.But makes for a nice key! What are you editing on? Beta makes a really good SD key. better then DV.

I hate to correct, but I believe DVCPro50 is NOT equal to digital betacam. Yes, they're both 4:2:2 color, but DVCPro50 is 720x480, not 486 -- so you gain slightly in lines of resolution. Pretty sure that DVCPro50 is more compressed than digi too.

Perhaps they are "comparable", but not "equal" by any means.

720X480 vs 720X486 has nothing to do with quality.

The 6 additional lines that are out of the FOV anyway... 6 lines...

DV is 720X480 and CCIR 601 NTSC is 720X486

They are visually equivalent. I think you couldn't tell the difference between Digibeta and DVC Pro 50 at 6 inches from the monitor.

According to the EBU, DVCPRO50 is identical to Digital Betacam in its first generation, and even after four generations of recompression it's still "similar to digital betacam." It's only after seven generations of recompression that it starts to lose on the comparison, where they classify it as "comparable, slightly worse than digital betacam."

So as long as you're sticking to six generations or less, or especially if you're talking about the direct footage, the EBU's declaration is that it's "identical" to digital betacam.

You can see excerpts from the report at http://www.adamwilt.com/EBU-DV.html; the DV50 portion is C.4.3, and the charts etc. start at C.4.6.

Isn't DigiBeta 10bit though?

Yep, it is,

i do trust Barry here-dont we do this always??!!,
but i thought before that the 10bit would help specially for keying...but i am not sure..!?

Any technical explenation Barry?

I have used the HVX200 DCVPRO50 for an SD shoot and it keyed very well. Couldn't use my DVRAck for capture (long story), so I captured FW in FCP and also on P2.

Jim, interesting about the 1080i vs 720p on the HVX. Good to know.
