deinterlaced possiblities in sony FX1

Hi everyone. I was about to buy DVX100b for 2500 dollars but I found a really good deal on a second hand sony FX1 for 1500 dollars. I am aware of the lack of XLR but I guees I could find a solution for that

My main concern is if I want to shoot in progresive mode, I would like to have that possibility. I have seen some footage in youtube with the fake progrresive mode of the Z1 and is really bad, I won´t ever use such a thing, the cinema tone was good on the other hand

I heard you can deinterlace the footge later on in the computer. My concern is . When you do this , do you get the same qualitu if yoy shoot with real progressive like the DVX100? can you tell the difference? The results are the same good like if you were using a real progressive camera?

thanks very much for your help

Well the main problem with Progressive and the FX1 is that you loose resolution. And the main advantage of the FX1 is just resolution.

But if you gonna do deinterlacing you have really to option if it isnt gnna look terrible.

Remove half the lines (same as CF25 and CF30) But if you have about 700lines res before you would have about 350 in the end (about the same as a cropped DVX100)

Or use some type of smart deinterlacing. You will have higher res but, you will have interlace artifacts.

So basicly the FX1 isnt for progressive shooting. Add the lack of XLR. And you se this camera isnt the perfect cam for you.

But of course the price is good so if you can live with the compromisses, buy it. But for normal DVD production i would go with the DVX.

Actually I took a look at CF30. It's more than useable if you aren't going to film. Seriously ask yourself if you are. You're looking at 22,000 minimum not to mention prints. Honestly for $1500, (if it's not a con) I'd buy the Sony, and I'm a DVX owner and lover.

All right, thanks very much for the information, what is the CF30? is probably a sofware but I can´t see any Info on the Intenet

CF30 is a deinterlaced mode of the FX1. There are two modes, CF24 and CF30, both of which manipulate the interlaced image of the FX1 to simulate a progressive image. Hope that helps.

Hands down get the fx1. Just pretend the cf modes aren't there and deinterlace in software (magic bullet, natress(my weapon of choice), dvmaker, what have you). Sure you may loose some resolution but when done properly it is not nearly as bad as some of the people here are suggesting.

As a person who owned a dvx(I now own nothing, waiting a bit to decide) the dvx only has 24p to offer, other than that it offers a grainy sd resolution picture. From the fx1 I rented before it was clean as hell and even after using software to deinterlace it still was HD which means it obviously has more resolution than a dvx which looks amazing when downconverted to dvd and still looks great on HD tvs.

You saying fx1 dvx? almost always fx1.
Now you're saying it's cheaper and a reliable seller?

Wow, what are you doing asking us? Get the fx1, grab a beatek adapter and win.

I upconverted DVX100 footage to 720P in my DVD, and my wife couldnt se the difference from that and a 1080P IMAX movie. ;)

People dont really care what you shoot with.

my school has two fx-1s, and I always still grab my dvx100b. The fx-1 has always just felt 'cheesy' to me for some reason.

I think the 100b is much more practical for indie filmmaking, 24p, XLR audio, much better low lite sensitivity, and if you just gotta have HD there are pretty decent uprezzing programs available, not to mention the andromeda conversion.

Had a chance to test out a FX1 the other day. Except for the resolution there isn't anything worth looking at. The colour and overall feel is just an oversized consumer camcorder. My colleague also felt it as a cheap immitation of the Z1, color and image seems poor and unimpressive compared to other HDV cams.

Well, I'm a FX1 owner and its a fantastic camera. Especially for only $1500!!!

Also, I'd have to point out a few things that I read above that are simply not true. It is NOT like an oversized consumer camera. How many consumer cams have you seen that have two neutral density filters and manual controls for everything from exposure to iris? The answer is pretty much none. I would call it (just as I would call most of the other cams being talked about) a prosumer camera. The lack of XLR inputs does suck. I can't deny that.

Overall, its a fantastic camera and it sounds like you're getting a great buy.

Oh yeah, and one more thing. The FX1 couldn't possibly be "a cheap imitation of the Z1" as it was released far before the Z1 was.

Well I don't know what that guy is talking about far as the fx-1
anybody who knows about this cam,and the DVX 100B
tHEY will tell you that the fx-1 has better color.

The problem is that image quality is very subjective.

So what one person like, another dont like. Dont take it like its end of the world. People that invest lots of money dont want to here a lot of critisism of their investment.

But I think that what the guy refering to is that the FX1 has a very out of the box video feel. Sure Videofeel doesnt have to come from a cheap home camecorder, it can come from any videocam basicly. Thats doesnt have anything to do with pro or consumer.

Ive seen stuff from the F900 cam and it screamed video, even if it where 24P. Ive also seen stuff from the same cam that screamed 35mm.

If some guy thinks he gets better filmlook from the dvx than the FX1 thats completely true from his point of view.

Well I think the fx1 is a great Digital HD video camera.
Lets say this for the record,it's not the Camera it's the person behind it,
what is your work flow, what do you know about lighting, what do you know about Digital Video,Diffusion,or softening, filters
Achieving the Film Look''..The film look comprises a collection of disparate features.first film is shot with entire frame at 24 fps.Second, and more importantly,at its best, film tonality is smooth, colors are rich, and above all, film handles a wide lighting or dynamic range.
The fx1 handles itself well, yeah we all know the 24p setting is kind of chezzie
but theres many ways around that. The fx-1 is better then the dvx in color !!
and alot other things, the Dvx has real 24p but know no HD there !!!
I got an fx1,I DON'T LIKE PEOPLE BASHING THE CAMERA !!!!
Im about the be buying an redrocket Adapter for a more filmic look''
My fx1 will be paying my mortgage, hard wood floors,my AG-HVX200, S-500, Granet counter tops, and more.
what is your Camera buying you today.......smile
lets all just make Good movies.
