DVCPRO HD and the HVX200

So here's an interesting problem I'm encountering-- I just finished directing this film which we shot on the HVX200 with 35 lenses. My producer set up the P2 dump through Final Cut (he had just gotten out of the hospital), and I of course was slightly distracted by directing the film to think and realize that Final Cut would be handling all the imports/conversions.

THe problem now is that we have 75 quicktime files that have been encoded with the DVCPRO HD codec, which, as I understand it, is not available for PC. My editor cuts in Avid, and our Adrenaline and Nitris systems here are all run on PC. Whenever I play one of the files, or import it into Avid, I get sound, but just a blank white video image.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.

Kyle

Use Edius Broadcast for editing. If you really need to go avid , you may want to first copy back the MXF Files to the camera and do a firewire transfer to a DVCPROHD deck (Rent). Worst case scenario if you insist on avid: Rent a DVCPROHD DECK, Put all the files in a DVCPRO HD timeline on the FCP machine, and do "print-to-video" to the deck. Master back to DVCPROHD tape, then recapture everything in the AVID system trough the HD SDI of the Nitris or Adrenaline system.

You can also skip the DVCPRO HD Deck part if you use the HVX camera for the Print to video Function. But bare in mind you'll only get a maximum recording time of 17 min of 1080p with 2 8gb P2 cards.

After recording back to the camera, you can Use the camera's component outs for capture in the Avid, Nitris or Adrenaline systems.

Avid will edit the original MXF files with no problem. The problem isn't that DVCPRO HD can't be used on a PC, it's that you're trying to use FCP's flavor of it.

I know I probably won't want to, but is there anyway to just batch reencode the quicktime files in FCP so they can be read by a PC with Avid?

I recently worked on a project that was captured through FCP and editing done on a PC AXP. I imported the QT's (from FCP DVCProHD codec) directly from the media folder on the HD supplied by the off-line house. Only additional software involved was "mac-drive" (cheap) which lets the PC use mac formatted drives.

good luck

Try installing the Serious Magic/Adobe DVCProHD Decoder -- there is a free trial available for download.

Do you have the original mxf files backed up somewhere?

If so use the Serious Magic/Adobe DVCProHD Decoder ($195) to convert to avi and/or QT

I think Avid XPress Pro can read the FCP Quicktime DVCPRO-HD files. I know EDIUS can, and I'm 80% sure that Avid can.

Try downloading the Avid codecs pack on your other Avid systems, I bet it'll work.
