here's the result of my weekend's work. I digitally created this effect on live footage to match a practical effect achieved with a dummy:
noBrains.jpg

I used after effects to achieve the muzzle flash and assemble the photoshop elements, but much of this was done by using premiere to export the short clip as an .FLM file and manipulating the 3/4 seconds of footage in photoshop.

hmmm. maybe this should be moved to photoshop section?

anyways, to see the whole video (not yet cc) check it out here.

feedback would be welcomed!! :D

Typical US: You can show a hat is blowing away but you can't show nipples!
What is more natural???

okok. Nice work but I don't like this kind of brutality/movie.

this is futuristic sci-fi, so yeah it would :)

i like it so much, but you're right there's a water balloon bursting effect to it. i think it's the way the debris and stuff kinda squirts all over instead of flying backwards.. well, it only has 1/3 second (yes, that's 8 frames at 24p) screen time, maybe when i'm done with all the other fx...

Video Copilot has a great tutorial on "headshot suicide" in AE by resident Andrew Kramer. Check it out if you have some time!

lol. i just picked up their dvds. in fact there are two blood bursts in my clip that I used from their collection. that dude's really talented!!

i just posted a montage of a half dozen other vfx clips I've done so far this week. Do you guys think i really need to have shell casing ejection fx every time i have a gun fire? I was thinking that maybe it's only necessary when I have a medium or close up shot...or would you guys cry foul if they weren't everywhere?

Hey Mark,

You gave me some props on the CC thread about the helicopter in LBC, so let me do the same for you here—I think the way you're making your film is the way of the future. DV Rebel style, and documenting the whole thing on line as you go, building a fan base even before the film is done. Kudos.

I hope my book comes out in time to be of help to you, as there's an After Effects template on the DVD that automates shell ejection animation using a particle system I scripted myself! You definitely don't need to do this for every shot, just a few here and there to "prove" that it's happening.

Keep up the great work!

O. M. G. Stu, from the freaking Orphanage, just praised my work. thanksssss STU!!!!! If the wife doesn't pre-order the book for me for xmas, i'm gonna buy it myself!!!!!

btw, when is the book due out? Amazon doesn't say

no dude, the site's grown beyond the structure i've put in place. i need to overhaul it. I'm going to move it over to another site that's more robust (ie- i didn't code myself). will let you know.

hey stu,
in your book, page 233, you talk about the top 10 percent issue even when outputting non-compressed, and the work arounds for getting your film from premiere to AE...

What if you import the entire premiere file in AE for the final CC of the whole film (as opposed to just the fx bg plates/footage). I ask this because I'm doing the final cc for the whole film now. I want to retain that top 10 percent but if i understand your method (using ProcAm) then I'd have to do each clip individually?

mark.
