Audio directly into the DVX100 -- how do you calibrate?

Thanks in advance for not laughing at me, because this is probably a bonehead question. If you have a two-channel pre-amp, and you are going line out from it through XLR cables to the inputs of the DVX100, I would need to set the DVX100 to line in rather than mic in, right?

And then, would this be the right way to calibrate my levels? Set a tone generator in my pre-amp to -12 db and set the level on the DVX100 so it is also registering -12 db when I play the tone?

And then I just ride the gain on my pre-amp to get as close to clipping as possible without clipping, and that will translate to the same non-clipped level on the DVX100?

Thanks much for any advice on this setup,

I'm not expert here, but I've done audio for a while, and just did a small corporate video yesterday using XLR line in.

I did essentially what you propose, setting levels. The trick is to get it hot, but not clip. I would NOT ride levels. I would go a little soft on levels and boost in post where I have absolute control. The risk of clipping is too great.

It's not like you are using the on-camera mic and will be dealing with ambient noise. I tend to run a chain in audio of gate, compress, soft limit, normalize. That takes down the low volumes, pushes the higher volumes, kills clipping, and then boost to -.3db. Works nicely for me.

Oleg, my "pre-amp" is actually a Sound Devices 722 recorder. I would be using the line outs to feed the inputs of the camera.

p.s. -- by the way, I read your posts all the time on R.A.M.P.S. -- keep up the great work!

so its zero-20 dbfs tone on 744 , , atunuate the signal for a couple db( 4 db) on 744 output
int menu
the camera -20dbfs
