Bad idea to edit on a flat screen monitor?

I am editing on a flat screen and have noticed still shots exported and printed or viewed on alternate programs appear darker. Is it best to avoid flat screens for editing?

It will depend how your monitor is calibrated. Your monitor may be set too bright - or the other monitors too dark.

Run a search for "calibrate monitor" and you should get some usefull help on the topic.

Thanks! Great idea =)

Editing on a flat monitor... good idea. Also having a calibrated production monitor hooked up to see what the footage will really look like... awesome idea.

I really like editing on a big flat panel display. I have a Dell 2405 24" model that I really like. I calibrate it with one of those Spyder devices but it's still on the dark side. Plus I have yet to see a LCD display that could match the dynamic range of a tube. So even though I edit on a flat panel, it would drive me crazy if I didn't have a CRT display to reference against.

I have a field monitor, but never tried to hook it up to the comp. Does it have to be run from the comp to a camcorder to the monitor, or directly from computer to monitor? I know weird question, but I read somewhere it had to be from comp to cam to monitor. Doesn't make much sense to me. =/

Depends on the ports you have on your monitor and computer. A common setup is to use a firewire output on the computer to a device that will convert the digital stream on the firewire to an analog output for the monitor. You can buy a dedicated converter but it's handy to use a cheap DV camcorder to do the conversion. Then you can use the camcorder to log tapes.

Get the Pantone Huey. it's dirt cheap and fairly accurate. you can find it on Amazon for under $100

it's worth it
