Borat: The Movie

I agree with you about everyone but Borat. Sacha Baron Cohen is really a brilliant satarist. The difference is the method by which he exposes people and the lengths he's willing to go to, to do so. Hes really a very smart guy. He graduated from Cambridge with a degree in history, and wrote his thesis paper on the Jewish enolvment in the american civil rights movement during the 60's.

I think with his comedy he's not only trying to entertain, but to educate people. First of all......how many bigots and racists are still out there...and second to show how stupid it is to be one.

I kinda agree... but I'm not sure if all his target audience is bright enough to get what he says. I would also argue that he educates people at the expense of Kazakstanis.

Having said that, the movie is hilarious! I had to watch it from front row at the theater but time went fast still.

i just like the honesty that comes from some poeple, whether its rascism, homophobia, mysogny..... somehow he gets people to open up and the real "values" come out.

The movie is unbelievably funny and Cohen is improvisationally brilliant. The character occasionally loses some steam when he lapses into SNL's "Two Wild and Crazy Guys" mode, but he packs the film with non-stop gags, so when something falls a little flat, it's followed up 5 seconds later by a good gag. There are clearly some staged scenes, like when a group of kids is scared by a bear, but it sure looks like most of the time--the people in the film aren't in on the joke. I'd love to know how they handled the clearances for the film, because on paper, it seems like it would be tough to pull off.

I don't think the film reflects badly on Kazakstan--because the character is so off-the wall, but it sure raises some questions about American values because of they way people react. On the other hand, Cohen's nutjob of a character goes out of his way to mess with people and keeps pushing until he gets a reaction, so you can't blame everyone. Still, when he says he wants to see George Bush drink the blood of every man, woman, and child in Iraq -- and the rodeo crowd cheers like mad, you gotta wonder. Go and soak in the crazy.

I guess there were two drunken frat boys in the movie that just filed a lawsuit claiming that they were duped into appearing in the movie. I need to see this.

This article discusses the release forms.

You definitely need to see it Horse. There are two scenes that are hard to believe hilarious. I want to see it again. :)

Ali G - how did I miss this? Now that they're rebroadcasting the whole series, I don't miss it. What I cannot believe is that so much of the world didn't know that Borat is a total fabrication - it's almost unfortunate that the secret is out.

Holy s*** this guy is at his funniest when he has a group of scientists in a panel discussion and he goes into bits on who didn't flush the toilet backstage and denying that he's a homosapien. Hilarious.

Cannot wait to see this tomorrow. I actually think that Ali G. and Borat are his best - Bruno, though funny as well, pales in depth to his better-defined characters.

I don't know about Dane Cook in a picture about Costco, but his Tourgasm is really funny. I grew up on Bill Cosby and Eddie Murphy, so maybe something with Dane just clicks. Comedy is such a subjective thing, not everyone is going to get it.

My favorite bits from the season are either:

Ali G at the ATF booth where he says:
Ali G: "What does ATF stand for?"
ATF: "Alcohol, Tobacco, & Firearms"
Ali G: "So what else do you sell?"

Borat:

The Republican campaigning and Borat says he is like Stalin and will crush opponents or laughing that a woman can vote.

Yeah, those were funny bits!!

I saw Borat with my girlfriend. I definitely laughed a LOT. Cringed a few times too. It's a compelling mix of absurdity and satire. The rodeo speech & singing was classic, as was the wrestling match.

When the film opened so huge, MY initial reaction was that Borat's success was good for indie filmmakers. The film definitely looks low rent (although the budget was apparently $18 mill!), and yet audiences are lapping it up.

My girlfriend, however, feels that Borat hurts the small filmmaker . . . by making it less likely that people will participate in your film. Some participants were completely duped and arguably exploited. A few individuals come across looking pretty bad (although one could argue it's their own damn fault). So my gal didn't care for it.

That said, it's funny. Go see it.

Just saw it. Laughed myself sick. Although the bit where the rodeo audience is applauding "George Bush drinking the blood of Iraqi men, women and children" kind of gave me the willies.

Any Kazakh or Rom who takes this movie seriously enough to get offended by it, is missing the point and needs a humor transplant.

Hell, my family is Jewish, and the giant Mardi-Gras paper-mache 'running of the Jews' scene had me rolling on the floor...

The frat boys in California aren't the only ones out to sue. I have read a couple of other incidents where people weren't fully aware of what they were being involved with. But, from what I read of the frat boys, they were just caught being themselves. If that is embarassing enough to sue over, you may need to reevaluate yourself. Of course, I was not a fan of Ali G, and have not seen the movie. But, just from the clips, I'm sure I'd be laughing too.

So, the lesson here kiddies, is be careful how you approach people for your video project. A signed waiver might not cover you. And if you are asked to be a subject on tape, don't get all huffy if you act like an ass.

WHAT? Exercise PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY?

An un-American sentiment, if ever I heard one. Someone oughtta sue you for even making the suggestion.

Is the old cowboy at the rodeo suing? I'm sure he's proud of his regretable performance. There's a big difference in someone who knows what they're doing is wrong and someone so ignorant that they don't even see it.

no joke.

I read a few articles, and there is tons of lawyers trying to find loopholes in the contracts, but no one has found anything yet. The rodeo agreed to let Borat sing the national anthem and requested they send a cd of him singing it, and show up 10 hours before the proformance. they sent them a cd, but it was blank, and when asked to give them a cd at the rodeo they said they didnt have one, and that is how Borat changed the song. They also didn't show up to the rodeo until it was a few minutes before proformance.

I loved the movie, I thought it was hilarious, I saw it the first night it came out, luckily I was in anchorage, because it didn't come out in Fairbanks until the next friday.
