HVX200+SGpro r2 + Zeiss/Nikon

Hello people,

my hvx is very happy the last few days :) I have purchased an Sgpro r2 and it's one of the best things i've done! I have made a quick film to test the Sgpro with my equipment. I want to share this film with you to tell me your thoughts. I used Macro Extension Tubes in some shots of this film to get the close up photography. This give very shallow DOF. Yet i was suprised at how sharp the results were. One other thing that i want to tell is that i add some vignetting in post, something that Sgpro doesn't produce. To see this thing, i'll post some uncce'd full frame grabs too.

Well, film was done with:

- hvx200e
- sgpro r2
- lenses: Carl Zeiss : Planar T* 50mm f1.4 / 85mm f1.4
Nikon: 35mm f1.4 / 85mm f1.4
- some extension tubes for macro

As for lighting, unfortunately, i have only room light, a desk light and the light that comes from a TV :D

the clip is here:

the full frame uncce'd grabs:

I would love your thoughts.

Thank you,
theodoros

What does the "e" in the Hvx200 mean? Is it another version than the regular HVX200? Or am I missing something basic here?

E is standing for European I believe but hvx200e is a PAL camcorder instead of NTSC. The rest is same.

Hi theodoros,

I love the use of available lighting, very creative indeed. These are the first few footages we are getting with the HVX connected to the SGpro, i think the results are certainly promising!

Wow, Theodoros that looked great ! You've been posting some great stuff for some time now.

What wattage were the bulbs you used and what F stops on the lenses did you use?

I've also ordered an SGPRO R2 for my HVX and Wayne has told me it will ship sometime this month - I can't wait, its gonna be great !

I've started stockpiling Nikon Lenses ready and I see you've gone for the excellent Zeiss Planar T1.4s. How are you finding them to work with?

If you don't mind me asking, how much were they and where did you get them from?

Thanks and keep up the fantastic work !

Looking goooooood!
So can you tell us more about the Zeiss bokeh?
Does it differ from the nikon one?
I have high hopes on the zeiss, because they almost seem exclusively made for adapter use...
And Wayne, what about the HVX tests you wanted to do?
And how´s the FF going?

Spartacus,
I did not make it to the HVX tests myself, however he is currently tweaking his setup with his PL lenses. He is a busy guy but promises to post footage of that setup soon.

The FF is on hold for a while.

Bad news...
For me the FF is a must-buy together with an adapter and for things like this I prefer buying a package.
You will have your reasons, but may I ask if the FF will only be delayed or more likely never go into production...?
The FF was the main reason the SG toped the Brevis in my considerations,
imagewise I like both.
I still will wait till probably march with my purchase, so I´ll see what comes up until then...
Keep up the good work, mate!

That is some good looking DOF. Does it lose a lot of light?

Thanks a lot jeremytuttle. Not at all. It's one of the good adapters at this point. :)

Thank you Richard for your kind words.
As for the lighting, these are what i have used:

http://www.stickypod.com/videos/data/560/light2.jpg
Spots are 50w each one and the other was 40w. F stop at lenses, was at 2-2.8 at the most of the shots.

I find these zeiss lenses a little bit sharper than my nikons, but my zeiss lenses are new and my nikons are 20-30 years old and 2nd hand at least... I've bought them from ebay. Price was about the price of www.zeiss.com.

I hope that your unit will come to you very soon and be sure that you'll gonna love it! :) You can ask me whatever you want about setup, lenses etc.. i'll be happy to help.

I'll plan to make a lense test next days and shoot the same things with same settings at same situations with different lenses, so everyone will be able to see how my nikons and my zeiss performs.

Wayne,
How long does it take to get one of these from order placement to the arrival at my door in San Diego, CA? Are you guys back ordered at all?

The framegrabs looked good! I wished you had provided a more interesting background though to check for edge to edge sharpness. Nevertheless, I'm loving what I'm seeing so far! Currently waiting for the video to download.

I'm not too concern about the follow focus. I'll hold my breath about buying the SgPro rev2 till I see footage from PL mount lenses! lol It's eventually the setup which I would ideally use for projects and so I would like to see how it performs.

Great work Wayne!!

p.s. Does that mic belong to you? It's a great mic doesnt it? lol

Thanks for the info Theodoros, Its great that you can get such good looking shots from minimal light.

So far I've aquired secondhand Nikon 135mm F2.8 and 28mm F2.8. I'm currently waiting on bidding for two Nikon F1.4s in a 85mm and a 50mm but I'll have to see.

If I can get great results from them and make it pay for itself I'll invest in the Carl Zeiss planars 50 and 85 T1.4s and the Distagon T2 35mm.

Thanks for the offer of help with any questions I have with setting up the SGPRO and the HVX, that would be fantastic!!!

I can't wait to see a short film from you using your kit. Keep us posted.

Many thanks,
Richard M.

Oh my!

Finally saw the video and may I say this? It's picture perfect! Creative is the word how the whole video was made and I absolutely love the low angle shots of the microphone and the lamp. Those 2 shots were the most film-like in my opinion.

I did notice some black "swirls" and a little noise in some of the shots. Could be from compression? I'm just nitpicking though lol.

(p.s. This video looks like a good ad for Blue microphones. Why dont you sell the video to them or something? lol)

Stunning.

With essentially zero lighting, you blew me away. Great editing, nice music, cool title font, and I watched it three times. I was sure you had some amazing light kit. This footage is making that adapter look pretty nice...

What did you do the CC in? That blue looked great.
