SHU - Music Video - HVX/M2

Hey Guys,

My last post was just to get some thoughts out there. I'm glad its sparked a little discussion. Like I said I agree that the concept is tired, and like I said, everyone knows it.

We'd all like to ascend past the cliche, but it takes time. My job as a DP is to give the director what he sees, not come at him with my moral-aesthetics.

I appreciate any harsh reviews. It really helps. I agree that the M2 has been popularizing the DOF, even in inappropriate times. I think that experimenting with extreme shallow and deep focus is the way to find what is right for the scene.

Most of the time I'm WFO because there is little light, so everything is shallow.

Understanding the music industry especially for artists on development contracts, even with major labels explains a lot about the content of their songs, music videos, etc. Its not as glamourous as it seems on Cribs. Trust me.

Anyone in the hip-hop game, even if they aren't rapping about girls and money, can appreciate where these guys are coming from and why they are trying to make this image. I've already gotten calls from some artists who aren't "ganster" who are interested in doing videos.

Lip-Sync. Yeah this is a hightlight reel. If this was a video I'd lauph also. The actual videos will make more sense.

J. Kahn knows what he's talking about. After dropping out of NYU Tisch, he directed over 100 low budget hip hop videos in Texas and around the country. You better bet he has done many many videos like this before he got to where he is today.

Hype Williams in a way started the "biggness" of hip hop videos, now he can experiment with other imagery.

I'm working on a 5 day short this week, so it will be a nice change to tell a story and not be lighting flying money, girls asses, and guys in cars. Though I'm going to be doing a lot more of that this year.

 Cheers,

Matt

PS: We shot some pickups this week and I added a new setup to the end of the reel. The HVX/M2 despite its softness issues it really a nice medium.

I also feel that Matt's inner knowledge of life among the marginalized, could yield some deep stuff. The attitiude in this video though is like cheep porno; apparently a lot of people buy it.

The "image" that is being sold today is an interesting topic. Who created it, who is being hurt by it, and most importantly who is making money off of it.

There is no easy "black & white" (no pun intended) answer either. The more you learn about the music industry the more confounding certain aspects become.

It could make for an interesting modern noir, not another 50 cent film.

Some day.

 Cheers,

Matt
