Borat: The Movie

I'm going to see it today. This is actually one of my most anticipated in a long time as I've been an Ali G fan forever.

Can't frickin wait.

I went to a press screening of Borat yesterday. I laughed so hard my head still hearts from the muscle cramps. There are a couple of scenes in that movie that had the entire theatre laughing for a solid 5 minutes.

The funniest part is actually what he gets other people to say, but Mr. Choen is probably the funniest person in the entertainment industry.

"This my sister. She number 4 prostitute in all of Kazakhstan. Niiice"

Borat was #1 at the Box Office and it showed at only 800 theaters. Compared to 3,500 theaters for Santa Claus 3. Niiiiiice.

I went to it friday...it was rediculously funny.

borat 26 mil....santa clause 3....20 mil.

Next week Borat goes to 2500 screens. Perhaps this will be one of the rare times a big movie makes more the second weekend. I don't see how it won't.

<possible spoiler warning>

if all this was real, does he sign contracts with all these people he meets in the film, including Pamela? Did he really do that to unsuspecting Pamela?

i have a feeling that whenever they were involved in something with a lot of people (like the Christian church scene) they let them know that they were thinking of doing something, but they twist their words to make it seem like it's for the betterment of Christianity -- thereby getting them to sign the release forms. *spoiler* Pam Anderson stuff was fake. Again, I think they told her "something is going to happen, we just won't say what - react how you would normally react", cause obviously they wouldn't go through all of that and center the movie around it if they weren't absolutely sure they could get Pamela Anderson on film. If that were real, she would've never signed the release form. UNLESS they gave her like a million bucks.

The interesting thing about my screening was that I knew from what everybody's been saying, that this movie was particularly harsh on Jews. So when the Apocolypto trailer came on and it said "A Mel Gibson film", almost the entire theatre booed (no doubt because of his insane drunken jewish slur ramblings). I just thought to myself, "These guys have no idea what they're in for." Then of course, the Bed & Breakfast scene came on and there was the oddest combination of silence and guilty laughter I've ever experienced. I just sat there cringing and, I admit, laughing, and you could just feel the silence from the back of the theatre.

I wouldn't call this movie 'great'. But I'd call it fun. It's pretty much an extended saturday night live skit. The only difference is that it's funny and it's able to keep it going.

I would call it great: Borat is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, and I think it's a landmark in comedy because of the seamless mix of production techniques (staged, hidden camera, faux journalism) -- it never slows down.

And I disagree that this movie is harsh on Jews (Cohen is a member of the tribe :); it's harsh on ignorant people like the frat boys who say with a straight face that "minorities have all the power in this country" as they pound beers in the back of a rented RV in their polo shirts, going back to the college their "powerless" parents are paying for.

I'd love to know how that Pamela part went down as well. I imagine between Jay Roach, Todd Phillips, and Larry Charles, they can call in some favors.

I agree with you about everyone but Borat. Sacha Baron Cohen is really a brilliant satarist. The difference is the method by which he exposes people and the lengths he's willing to go to, to do so. Hes really a very smart guy. He graduated from Cambridge with a degree in history, and wrote his thesis paper on the Jewish enolvment in the american civil rights movement during the 60's.

I think with his comedy he's not only trying to entertain, but to educate people. First of all......how many bigots and racists are still out there...and second to show how stupid it is to be one.

You see, me and my best friend are from that region so thoes jokes go even FURTHER with us... they made me nearly barf i was laughing so hard...
