Mark and Ted's Excellent Adventure in Drama

Mark, why would you NOT shoot with the 35 adapter? The added DOF really makes a difference, IMO. I've been really surprised by how much BETTER those adapters tend to look on HD than just the regular DVX.

Speaking on my own personal opinion, sometimes you wouldn't shoot with an adapter is a shoot needed to be expediated, or if you wanted a deep depth of field.

Also, the stock lens has it's own unique look which is good in it's own right. :)

Alright, I'll ask the noob question. I've got Nikon lenses, but what are 'primes'?

Oh, and Ted, looking forward to hearing when you guys get your script drafted out! Think it'll be this week?
Primes are fixed focal length lenses and there are a number of reasons that you may choose not to use them. You may, for instance feel that make a picture too soft. If the shallow DOF isn't necessary in telling the story you may not want to trade off the loss of light due to the additional glass. Depending on the locations, you may be able to achieve a shallow depth of field due to the room you have to move around.

Regarding the adapter issue, there are a lot of factors involved. You'll lose light when you shoot with them and, depending upon your lens, the light loss may be considerable. The resulting image is upside down so you can't use your HVX LCD or viewfinder unless you can get yourself accustomed to looking at the frame upside down (something I can't and won't do). That means you have to use a framing monitor, which is fine, but it is a different way to shoot and has a 'hassle' factor involved with it. Moreover, shooting with the adapter using primes means that you don't have the luxury of zooming to your desired focal length. Takes quite a bit more time for that factor alone as you have to set up your camera to fit your lens field of view rather than zooming to match your framing desires. Additionally, if you're running a razor thin depth of field you really have to take your time to get focus tight -- much more so than the stock lens setup.

Jack and I shot part of Rekindled with an adapter and there's no question that those shots took much more time and were more challenging. The adapter is a tool that can be useful but as our DP says, just because you can rack focus doesn't mean you should.

I show you mine if you show me yours! But you can't tell any one about it... not that there is anything wrong with that! :)

Guys,

I have it on good authority that by tomorrow morning there's going to be a new Variety article with some new NEEDLE scoop. When you have your morning coffee be sure to go to the top of the thread to read all about it!

Hey! Look what we won!!!

I think it was for the simulated tan we gave Ted's pictures. (He's actually quite a sickly looking fellow)

On a side note. Where are all you folks getting the little award logo image. I mean, I know you put your own text, but is there some place you are getting the image part. I see them everywhere. Not that I'll be needing one :)

Hey, just want to spread a little love to Jason (Ramjet). He put up an interview that you can download to watch. It's only 5 minutes long but enjoyable. He did a great job with it.

Jason, don't do that!!!!!!!!!!!

I just pimped your thread and when I hit "submit" your post comes up before mine! It looks bad.

Oh, well... as you can see by the time (06:54 PM) we posted at the same time!

It's all good! :)
