Mark and Ted's Excellent Adventure in Drama

Wow, very difficult to stay on top of this thread. So much happening so fast! Looks like things are going well for you guys. Ted, be careful, you're probably never going to want to leave LA. I know I hated leaving there to come back to the midwest. There's so much energy there!

Yeah, Geoff

Ted doesn't want to leave California, except that he's missing his wife a whole bunch now that he's been away from her 4 days. You'd think they were newlyweds instead of ten year veterans of the marital wars :)

We drove up from our location shoot to San Jose and kept going to Concord so that Ted could visit his brother and his family there. Nice people. Even though it was late in the evening they fed us and gave us a couple cold beers. By the time we made it back down to San Jose it was late and we crashed.

The long drive did give us time to discuss a lot of pre-production issues and we feel very good about where things are. Later today we'll have some new BTS stuff. Also, given the fact that the Variety Reporter interviewed us at a truckstop near Lost Hills I expect there may be a new article with new news to read at the top of the thread later today!

Guys....I still haven't fully understood what you're doing. Is this 9days trip to Cal. a pre-production thing only or are you shooting the thing as well? Does this mean that the 'needle' will be finished when Ted gets back and you'll just have to do post?

Morning VersuS!

This is a 9-day pre-production trip. We developed the script before Ted came out and I set up auditions for parts that we held in L.A. last week. It also gave Ted the chance to visit our locations and meet with our male lead, who was cast before Ted arrived. We then spent the weekend shooting B-Roll and some very interesting technical shots that will be used as cutaways in the final film. Yesterday we slogged our way up the 5 to San Jose where we'll finish out this week until Ted leaves Thursday. I have three actresses here who we will be auditioning (I kept my casting database from my Chow Baby auditions and these three were extremely talented so I gave them all personal invitations to read for the part).

Our goal is to have our script close to a shooting script by the time Ted leaves Thursday. After Ted leaves he'll take the audition tapes with him and will make his final casting decisions back on the East Coast. Given how well we've worked together so far, I don't expect we'll have many disagreements in that department.

Our primary shooting will begin early January (probably about the 4th) and Ted will return for that shoot. Between now and then I will be working with our Effects Team to get a jump on the VFX shots.

A lot to get done by January but we feel pretty good about everything!

Ok! Now I got it! Really nice planning though I'd feel really stressed with your shooting schedule. I wanted to have my footage by Xmas and then have like 50 days for post and any (please God let it not be the case) reshooting.

I'd rather have it sitting in my HD for weeks before deadline than go through once more the HorrorFest experience! (yikes!).

Yeah, VersuS,

These festival schedules are really tight. That's partly why we're assembling a pretty big team and are dividing up work. No doubt January is going to be a ***** but if we get our difficult technical shots out of the way it should make it less stressful.

Also, before January we plan to "shoot" the entire film using FrameForge3D (previsualization software)

That should help us shoot much more efficiently.

Finally, we've got an upcoming announcement regarding a couple new team members that should really increase our efficiency! Stay tuned!

Yeah, it was fun helping shoot some B-roll stuff with Mark. Give me a holler if you need any more help with some of that stuff.

Hey, hey, hey!!! I'm online!!!

It was getting to the point where I thought about finding a couple of monks to craft some pages for me!!! Any thing has GOT to be quicker the service I've been finding. (And let's not blame the Mac..... yeah, it's crammed full of sh*t but there have been other factors at play here.... (right Mark?).

Dudes and Ladies.... this trip is amazing. If you ever have the chance to travel to California and get the VIP treatment where ever you go, I highly suggest accepting the offer. WOW!

There is so much to share from this trip. Looking forward to passing it all on to you.... in time.

And as for Mark.... he is a stand-up guy and lives life the way it should be lived. An "awesome dude" is one term that would aptly describe him.... and a "kindred spirit" is another.

More to come......

Thanks Geoff for stopping the the Thread Shop! We rotate our stock on an hourly basis, so don't be a stranger!

And yes... me leaving CA is only a brief interlude until I move here. (Which, I think, will be as soon as my wife finishes teaching this school year.

It is wonderful out here. I knew that it was when I first left it and NEVER intended to be gone for so long.

Brandon, you are freaking me out! Are you behind my shoulder or something??? I posted, refreshed and found your reply!

HA HA, man.... thanks for being on top of things!!!! That's awesome.

By the way. Because I think someone mentioned this previously, we do have a Redrock Micro M2 adapter with a bunch of Nikon primes BUT we haven't made any decisions as to whether we'll be shooting with it or not. That's going to be a DP decision that will be made later. Most of what we're shooting now are either test plates or technical plates for the VFX team.

It is great out here. I have this recurring nightmare that I'm somehow back in Florida... I start to freak out and save up money to move and then I suddenly wake up and realize I'm still here in LA... talk about waking up in a cold sweat!

nice pictures... your banner led me here, so... props!
i think i need to lay off the mark and ted thread for awhile... ;) i need to get back to my film for a bit!! lol

Alright, I'll ask the noob question. I've got Nikon lenses, but what are 'primes'?

Mark, why would you NOT shoot with the 35 adapter? The added DOF really makes a difference, IMO. I've been really surprised by how much BETTER those adapters tend to look on HD than just the regular DVX.

Oh, and Ted, looking forward to hearing when you guys get your script drafted out! Think it'll be this week?
