24pA & "frame mode" in same timeline

Curious if anyone can help with this...

I have a documentary that has both dvx100b 24p advance
and canon gl1 "framemode" footage to work from.

Can these coexist in the same timeline
without compromising the resolution/ increasing motion blur?

If I need to work in a 29.97 fps timeline for "framemode"
how do I preserve the 24pA from getting jaggy?

thanks!

Ideally, you would have shot 24p Normal and it would cut in just fine on a 60i timeline. You should be able to take your 24pA footage and output it as 24p Normal and then use that. What NLE are you using?

yes.
yes.
hind sight always 20/ 20
or is that 24pN/ not 24pA....
f5 rather than f6 would have made my life a bit simpler indeed.

working in fcp 5.

when you say "output as 24p normal"
do you suggest capturing with pulldown
and then dropping it in a 23.98 timeline
and exporting as a 24frame quicktime?
then reimporting that into a 29.97 timeline?

i have about 15 hours of footage in both formats
(30 total)
that i will be sifting through...
cutting down to about 1.5/2 hours.
any way i can edit first
and then conform/transform my 24pA footage after.
or do i have to do the switcharoo prior to cutting?

thank you so much for time/mind/words!

The only difference is the way the 24p frames are split up and arranged into 60i fields. 24pA makes it easier to extract the original 24p frames. Standard 24p is better for viewing.

hey joshua-
if you have a moment.
did you have the specifics of how to best work around creating 24p out of 24pA?
i'm using fcp/cinematools/etc
merci-

thanks for the input david!
i thought you might like to see
another option of plugins from nattress.com
a friend posted
on a different thread.

"On the DVX100 I shot in 24p Advance for some shots, but really I wanted to shoot in 24p Normal.

24pAdvance uses the 2:3:3:2 pulldown pattern, which, if not removed, can look jerky. That is why
you cannot just leave the pulldown intact and use it direct in a normal NTSC 29.97fps timeline.

You have two options:

Capture the 24pAdvance footage as normal NTSC, apply the G Advanced Pulldown
Conversion plugin from Standards Converter (found on Nattress web site) , or,

Capture the 24pAdvanced footage with FCP set to remove advanced pulldown, place on
a 23.98fps timeline, set FCP to add 3:2 pulldown on playout and play out to tape.
Now recapture as normal NTSC.

seeing that i'm working with about 15 hours of footage this plugin might be a huge time saver.
