Hi all
I have not looked around the forum much, But I thought I would mention for those who are intrigued enough to buy an HVX because of it's ability to do slow and fast motion. (Over/Undercranking) You should know that you dont need to have a P2 card to do this. I have found that Avid Xpress HD Ver 5. something, has let me do a direct to disc recording in any frame rate offered up on the camera menu, via Firewire, by selecting the "Preserve Varicam Frame Rates" Setting under the capture window. I simply selected my camera as an HD1200A (even though it is an HVX200) and noticed I can now do LIVE Over/Undercranking recordings, direct to disc without the need for a P2 card. I have not used it too extensively yet, but I tried it the other night and had %100 luck in my 9 or 10, 2 minute test captures. Of course youll be tethered to a computer VIA a firewire cable and this can only be done in real time, but it did work for me flawlessly.
For what it is worth, I have also strapped a Laptop to my back out in the field and shot directly into it VIA Firewire. (Man I felt as if the Old Umatic Days were back. The camera shrunk and the deck grew) Non the less, it works and the producer liked it because she could see what I was shooting as we shot directly into the timeline.
If someone with some Credible Tehcnical Merit would like to follow this topic up, I encourage it. Im no guru nor claim to be. Im sure there are drawbacks, I just have not discovered any yet.

P.S. Someone needs to invent a little Swiveling Firewire jack adapter (like the ones they used to make for Corded Telephone Handsets to keep the cord from getting all tangled up) You could keep it permanently plugged into your 4 pin port like a port saver. Being that you could then route the typically stiff 1394 cable in any direction and strap it to the camera, it would thereby relieve stress off the on-camera 4 pin port (Dont know why Panny just did not use the 6 pin port like so many of the shoulder cams offer, it takes allot of abuse, those four pin ports are begging for repairs)
Right angle firewire plugs would work well too iguess, I just have not found any locally that go beyond a couple feet.
