My battery is still charging and I don't have a P2 card yet but I was planning
on shooting with tape. My vendor who just sold me the camera a couple of hours
ago said that I could use the regular Panasonic
Mini Dv tape that iIve been using but I just read in the manual that it says
to use 6.35mm wide metal tapes. These sound different. I want to go shoot
some stuff but since I haven't run a single tape through this camera yet, I want
to get started right.

Are these metal tapes different? Should I get them? Please hurry...I need to
shoot something! Thanks!

It accepts regular 60/63 minute MiniDV tapes, they all have 6.35mm wide media. Do not use tapes with longer recording capacities.

Panasonic recommends their PQ and MQ tapes.

My HVX can take tapes???

:D

Yes interesting! For those of you that may not remember, tape was one of those acquisition formats used back in the day. It is still regarded by some to be the Holy Grail of media and as such the engineers at panasonic felt it necessary to appease the masses and so they very cleverly installed a tape recording mechanism into the HVX. If you look closely behind the "hidden door" beneath the handheld strap, you will see the inner workings of what once used to be a very highly respected recording mechanism. "The tape deck".
Shhhhh! Dont let word of this get out. The Canonites, Sonyites and JVCer's might be listening.

Interesting. I just thought it was like a place to store stuff, when I didn't have pockets.

Hmm.. Tape.. Is that like VHS or cassettes? You know like with a ribbon and such.

On a side note. The radio station I work at still uses analog carts for their commercials, which is about the size of an 8 track tape and one of those ribbon things that go on "tapes" on a wheel.

The tape is physically thinner, my guess is that the tape transport mechanism wasn't designed to handle it, and Panasonic is concerned about reliable operation.

It might work, and it might not. You don't want to wind up with tape salad and lost footage.

Out of curiousity (aka job pressure), why shouldn't the HVX handle 80-minute tapes?

Why do packages of hot dog buns come in six, while packages of hot dogs are sold in five.
