It filters out mats. Also broadloom and shag rugs, but those functions require special filters....

Colin- A matte box is designed to shade the lens from getting hit by unwanted light sources and/or the the sun. When an unwanted light hits the lens it lowers the image quality (makes it cloudy) or in some cases creates a dynamic looking lens flare.

this matte box is designed to hold 4x4 filters (or 4x5.6 and 4x6 [VERTICALLY] it has 2 slots). there are a variety of filters available. i would suggest a polarizer for outdoor sunny shots if you want the blue sky to be really blue, the green to pop and the white clouds to be distinct. if you are shooting the ocean- it is essential. another good filter for the dvx100 is a 1/8 black pro mist- particularly when you want to shoot a pretty girl who is being well lit (it softens the harsh details of the image). 4x4 filters are not cheap, but good glass filters in front of your lens will help if you are trying to get a perfect picture. (but sometimes we don't want a perfect picture.)

the top portion of the matte box that looks like a wing or something is called an eye brow (not a french flag- a french flag is a seperate attatchment that project way out in front of the lens). the eye brow can be lowered just above the lens to keep out any unwanted lens flare.

do a search on the formatt 500 matte box and see what this thing is and how much it retails for.
