THE NIGHTSHIFTERS - better late than never!

Evening all.

Well it took a little longer than first anticipated but we finally made it.

Really gutted we missed the deadline for horrorfest, got on board about
2 months too late, but well done to all the winners.

This was truly a fantastic experience for us, like a manic crash course in indy filmmaking. We jumped in knee deep having only ever played about with the DVX and never made a short film before.

All the effects of which I'm really chuffed with were pretty much learnt on the fly.
The film was shot using the Redrock Micro35, which blew us away in terms of the pictures filmic quality (never knew our little panny had it in him).

Anyways happy Halloween everyone, enjoy!

Holy shi*! :) That was amazing :)
Sound effects were awesome, tell us more about the effects there, what programme was used, AE?
The only thing i didn`t like was the voice over, apart from that, your short would be my nr one vote!
GREAT JOB!!

Thanks Cipa,

Yeah the voice over really let us down. This is literally the first experience recording dialog. We also recorded without picture, but hey it's all a learning curve!

All of the effects like heads coming off and the composting were achieved in after effects. I just played around and experimented really, once I got the hang of layers and key frames, the seemed logical.

The monsters head was replaced with a CG version done in maya, this was trial and error, again the first time we'd done this.

The blood was all digital.

Great! I kinda understand all those effects and how to create them, except the one where "the wolf" punches through the stomach?? how do you do that? lol
Let me guess, blood came from Adrew Kramer`s "Action Movie Essentials", well maybe i`m wrong?
Can you tell me more about the DVX settings, was it 25P? Did you kept the master pad low? Stuff like that...perhaps you have some ""behind the scenes" photos, that would really help!
Thanks

The wolf punch was pretty straight forward.

First I filmed the wolf punching the vampire, as he does so he just hides his arm in front of him. Then later I filmed the wolfs arm punching through a hole in a green screen holding the fake heart.

The close up scene where he squishes the heart was the same, on both shots I did yes indeed add Mr.Kramers fantastic matted blood bursts.

The film was shot in 25P, as for the setting I'll have to post them another time as I'm at work and can't remember.

I'll try and add behind the scenes pics as and when I can.

Thanks Zenon :), looks like you put a lot of work into this one, but hey, i would be proud to have something like this on my list.
Look forward to all the other info :)
Cheers

Ok, one more :) About the sound effects...punches, wolf`s roars, blood bursts, where did you get all those sounds from? just curious, thanks.

I re-used the blood burst sound allot. I work in a digital advertising agency which makes viral advertising, they buy sound effects all the time so I pinched a few from them. All the wolf sounds came in one package from shockwave-sound.com.

Sorry not too hot on the terms for the redrock attachments.

The SD I guess as I used a DVX, not an HVX?

Wow, some incredible imagery and effects! Nice work! I agree with Timur in saying this would have been top 3.

i love the werewolf / vampire thing. you did it without going underworld, and you kept some political toungue in cheek humor. excellent work. i watched it like 5 times. i love it!!!!

Ok, I just watched it. Initial impressions:
Very nice look and some nice special fx.
I really liked the overall look of the footage.
Solid all the way around.
I was listening to it in the cue speaker at work here on the sound board, so I couldn't hear it great, but here are my few little observations on sound, which may or may not be relevant due to crappy pc at work with quicktime, and bad cue speaker....
The overall audio of the flick seemed a little hot maybe? Anyone notice some distortion in there?
Early on it seemed I may have noticed a bit of overdubbing of voices that didn't quite sync up, but that may just be on this comp.

Solid acting all around. Good complete film. Entertaining and enjoyed it. Good work

My humble opinion
Jason

Omg i loved it! Great lighting and camerawork. I especially loved how you lit the vampires. Care to share your setups and lighting kit? Behind the scenes pics would be welcome!
