This old Frame Rate

HI All

Im sorry if this is redundant but I have several questions regarding 24pA Rec that hopefully, someone will not be irritated with.

I am working on a fairly large Documentary and shooting allot of footage we need to duplicate before turning in to to the producer of the project.

With My HVX, Im recording to DV tape in Widescreen 24pA. I wish to make copies of that tape. I do not have another 24P camera or deck. I have several cheap panny palmcorders with Firewire ports. Can I dupe this VIA firewire and keep retain an exact clone of the original tape using one of these palmcorders?

Iv been shooting for years but am very new to 24p and am desperately trying to understand the technical side of it. I do understand the pull-up and Pull-down, and understand the difference between Normal and advanced. What I dont understand is how 24p is written to tape. It seems to play back with time code corresponding to 30fps. Why is this? If I understand this, then That tells me that my Editing platform is looking for flags or markers in the frame rate to keep it at the 24p Natively shot footage or something. Otherwise, my camcorder should advance, frame by frame, at 24 frames at a time, not 30 right?

I hope this makes sense to someone. I have thirty hours of footage I copied onto a hard drive until I get time to figure out how to make a simple Dupe from Deck to deck at the native 24p.

Many thanks for any response in advance

you got it a bit backwards

dv tape is always 60i - so the 24p or 24pa is encoded within the 60i stream. Therefore the timecode is based on 30 frames per second - editing systems will only pulldown if you tell them it is 24p or 24pa footage - otherwise it will read the "mixed frames" at 60i.

So this means a dup over firewire will be exactly the same with the encoding at 60i.

Thanks so much for the response. Now it is sinking in. My Rock and Redeemer is always 60I or 30P. No matter if I shot at 1 frame a second or 120. I can tell my software to record it and play it back the way the camera saw it to begin (hence the 24p setting when I setup a project) or just leave it alone because the camera has pulled it up for me to 60I already.

BTW, Im surprised I have not seen anyone talking much about it, but are most on the forum aware that AVID will let you do Over-Undercranking on the fly using the "Varicam" Setting?. I have had perfect success in capturing slow and fast motion VIA a live feed from my HVX camera over firewire without a P2 card, using AVID. Maybe I will post a thread on it.

Thanks again for your patience and response.

Most NLEs will record over/undercranking on the fly. Because it's ALWAYS a 60fps stream on the FireWire cable. All the NLE does is removes the unneeded frames on the fly. FCP does it, Edius does it, it's not an Avid exclusive. It's sort of old news, as this was introduced with the DVX100.
