Playback Software for On-Set

I'm about to start shooting a musical feature that will revolve heavily around on-set playback. Does anyone know of any software available for on-set that will handle playback countdown for music or something to that effect? I was told by someone there was, but unfortunately he wasn't able to look it up before he left the country for a project. Thanks

You could load the songs into Itunes if you had to :)

But Pro Tools is where everything will most likely end up.

I actually just finished shooting a musical feature, and I could definetely answer any questions you have regarding playback, etc.

The easiest (and cheapest) way to work it is to playback the sound off either a burnt cd, or an mp3 player, just making sure that you have a click track on it at least for the lead in.

A bit more complex way to do this, also allowing to put a count off before every take, regardless of where you are in the song number, is to use any of the many audio packages out there (pro tools, logic, sonar, hell even garageband will do this.) Essentially you would record to a click in your tracking application, and use the same app for playback. You would have to set it to give you a "count off" before each take. This helps IMMENSLY for synching later.

I had a hell of a time synching up some of our musical numbers, because we didn't have the resources to have a seperate person controlling playback on set. So we wound up just hitting play on the CD player. However, if you're careful, you can still pull it off.

The one thing i'll say time and time again about musical numbers, is use a click track, it'll make a world of a difference.

The demo version of Ableton Live (download at www.ableton.com) is perfect for playback. You can easily add a clicktrack, you can have a countdown. You can even record, but you can't save.

IF timecode is involved, then pro tools is what's the industry standard. Usually, you'll have a pro tools operator sending music to the PA and to the production sound mixer. The timcecode will come out of the sync i/o and go to the cameras or slate, as well as theh production sound mixer. That's how they sync it up later in post.

Okay,

I am using Sonar 5.2 and not the lastest of 6. When I'm recording 12 mono tracks at 24/48k, it runs very smooth. I even drop markers by pressing the default F11. The markers are absolutely on the fly. It's not a professional computer that I'm using, just a basic AMD 3000+ with 2GB of ram. Nothing much there. But it can run at that resolution for 4 hours straight. Only when it happens that you run stereo tracks, the time is cut in half to 2 hours. Ableton Live is also a very good program to use.
