Hey,

Some footage I took the other day. Let me know what you think. Actually grabs of footage I took. There is some wierd compression artifacts going on. Is it just out of focus? Any tips on how to improve on the image?

Chris

Something weird is going on. Not sure how to fix it. It all looks slightly out of focus. Remember to zoom in and focus, and then zoom out. What was your compression process?

Hi,

I think it was just out of focus. All the grabs look okay to me except the one outside with the leaves. I think I'll understand things better once I get Barry Green's DVX book.

Something I had thought about was do you think it could be an issue with shutter speed? Because the kitchen pic and window condensation pic look great (no motion). But the one outside with the leaves, some motion (slightly). Maybe it is a case of the wrong shutter speed and also being slightly out of focus.

I captured in iMovie HD 6 and output as 24 frames per second and compressed with the H.264 codec. I then used a seperate utility to take grabs form the original Quicktime file.

I do not think it is an issue with compression but how I originally shot it.

Hey,

After looking at my DVX I think I figured it out the focus switch was on auto and not manual. I always shoot with manual of course must've got switch to auto when I was cleaning it or something (seems like the switch moves easily).

Glad I got this one figured out.

It was both out of focus and compression problem. Look at the jagidness of the leaf. If it was just out of focus it would of been blury. But you have 1) Out of focus 2) motion blur and 3) compression all that resulted in that funky looking image.

You've also then compressed the original compressed footage with an additional layer of h.264 compression which didn't help your case.

Check out my leaf footage
http://www.icanpledge.com/aboutus/test2.mov it's about 80 megs h.264

It has blur but as you can see blur alone does not cause the effect you got.

True but the other grabs look great .Shot the same day. I think the camera was going in and out of focus which is why I got some good looking grabs and some that were just horrible looking.

what's wrong with "auto" focus? shouldn't it do the job? [Auto= self]
The problem is sometimes it causes the image to go in and out of focus like in my case. Auto focus isn't always reliable. It's like taking a short cut. If you want your images to look good focus manually. It'll give you more control over the image.
