I have somebody locally who wants to get rid of their dvx100, and hes willing to sell it to me for super cheap, but theres over a thousand hours on the heads. so I was wondering how much it would cost to get the heads replaced at a shop. any idea guys?

I bought my dvx100 with 492 hours on it. I used it for maybe 20 hours, and started getting the dirty cylinder message. I sent it to the panasonic authorized shop in Houston. They "replaced parts, re-aligned, adjusted tape tension, cleaned tape path, performed functional check" for a total of $988.32. The parts replaced were the cylinder unit, the p/r (?), and the c/r (?). Parts = $613.00, labor = $375.00, diagnostic fee = $81.19, sales tax = $81.51.

ok cool... so the answer to the seller will be no
well, for me it would depend on what you mean by "how cheap" Hell, if he wanted 500 bucks or something else ridiculously low for it and I got to inspect it firsthand and it looked to be in good shape I (personally speaking) would grab it just for a backup cam.

And if it came with Barry's book, DVD, and MB editors I would try to sell those separately to recoup a little of my investment.(in my case, since I already have those things. you would definitely need to keep them.)

BTW, how much is he asking?

800, but whatever cam I get its going to have to last me a long time, and Im poor, so if I waste 800 on it and it breaks in 20 hrs, I'm screwed

I agree. Since I already have one it wouldn't be critical for me if it went down, but in my case I wouldn't use it for anything more than a B-roll/backup cam anyway, even then I would only take it if I knew it had been taken care of and could personally inspect it.

In your case definitely wait until you find a low hours model, since you'll be keeping it for a while. It will cost more, but at least you won't be "penny wise and dollar foolish".

I've bought many expensive things in my life; I've never regretted spending the premium for quality, but several times I've regretted buying cheaply, and perversely ended up spending more in the long run.

That should be in the bible.
