This is a small reel I cut from a music video we did this weekend. It was a pretty typical low budget hip hop music video shoot.

M2 w/ HD Achro. Nikon 28mm, 55mm. Small Tungsten/HMI package. Skateboard Dolly.

I have an HD version but most of my clients can't watch H264 so I'm sticking with Sor3.

Cheers,

WOW! Looks great dude! Very MTV worthy!!! Song is pretty good too! Nice rack focus (I know how hard that is with a still lens!!)

Nice control on the skateboard dolly well done, nice grading for a change also.

I love the subtle cool look - so difficult to do well and it contrasts nicely with the warm, orange and green hues in the beginning. So of the sync with the vocals seems to be off, but very nice indeed.

Thank you for the compliments. This was my first HVX/M2 shoot.

Justin Marx The rack focus was about two full turns on the follow focus. And it had to be timed with the action in the BG. Those two things don't work well in a low budget no AD or walkie situation.

As for the grading. I'm glad that it looks acceptable. I attribute it to the 4:2:2 color space that I color corrected it in. The original first scene is actually shot @ 3200k with an HMI. The added color spaced allowed me to changed the uncorrected blue to 2800-3500k in post without too much grain.

I did side by side test of CC in HD 4:2:2 and SD downconverts 4:1:1 and the difference is about 40% more flexibility in gain and color space.

Lastly, everyone thinks that the music in the "reel" is the music from the video. Its not. That song is by the Black Eyed Peas. "Hand up." It just cut so well with the footage that I kept it.

I treat the HVX/M2 like I treat a SR3. I just put the nice soft metal baseplate on my shoulder and support the rig by the 15mm rods.

I have a spiderbrace and I've used a similiar system to the Cavision, but to me they aren't worth the trouble. The movietube has the right idea for that.

If we are shooting narrative I might insist on some rod-mounted grips if I have a wireless FF or a long enough whip for the AC. Otherwise I'm fine with a naked rig. Many operators work this way, that I've seen.

Sometimes I use a small towel as a pad.

Cheers,

Matt

Thanks Chris. :dankk2:

I'm finishing my last year of college at the University of Rochester. Most of these music videos are local but some are NYC. I'm back and forth between MA for random shoots etc.

By the summer I'm going to be 100% NYC. Most likely Harlem or the Bronx. How is the weather in NJ right now?

just curious as to why you didnt use the actual song for this video.... why black eyed peas? just seems kind of bizarre to do a music video and then not use the music

maybe I'm missing something here?

either way, good shots..... I especially liked the one where the rap dude was spinning his back around, nice CC

HAHAHAHAHAHHA!! I did that for 8 days straight! SUCKED!! Started using a towel the 1st day, but it was to hot! My spiderbrace BROKE, I attached some counterweight to the back of it to take away from the 100% front heavy feel! That was GREAT till it broke..

Very nice work matt - looks great and I love the grading - what tool did you use for the color work?

Most of the shots look nearly perfect - couple of times the edges were a bit soft - only noticable if you are looking for it - and I noticed the out of focus white car bloomed some light a bit (which is rare with the M2 element)

very impressive work - I love the pot sink shot

Hey Guys,

The main reason I used the Black Eyed Peas track is because I don't have the mastered version of the song. Also that track really makes the footage look good. This is for my reel and the directors reel.

Thanks Seth. This was a real run and gun shoot. It was actually raining for part of it and I was hiding underneath a camera coat. Its amazing that any of it is in focus, hah.

The color grading was done in FCP in a 720p23.98 timeline. I used the three-way CC and magic bullet 2.0 editors. If we were outputting to digibeta or d-5 I would work in an uncompressed 10-bit enviornment in Shake.

But until that budget arrives and we get a Black Magic HD card, a RAID enclosure, and a fiber obtic card I'm okay with 8-bit FCP color correcting.

Cheers,

 Matt

PS: I reiterate that wait until you see this next video. :Drogar-Love(DBG):
