Some frame grabs from my upcoming short film ILLEGAL - HVX + M2

Wow I love these grabs.
Dloading trailer now.

The other thing, judging by the screen grabs alone, your main actor (assuming that's who he is) seams like a great actor just from his expressions alone.

I think the footage looks pretty cool, I donno how into the ultra high contrast I am, I think having highlight and shadow detail is important...even with super high contrast.... but it does look cool....but anyways ummm was that a trailer....no sound?...just music dubbed over...I think you need some dialog and deffinetly some sound in there....just the music and clips...I mean it made it feel like an extended DOP reel or something. Im not trying to be harsh, your certentily a few steps ahead of me in this whole filmmaking thing... I really just dont understand why you chose to do that.

I would love to know what lenses were used?

Also - the compression is hitting this vid pretty hard so it is hard to tell how smooth the out of focus stuff is - any chance you can post 10 seconds or so of a larger file?

Finally - I would love to know if this will stand up to a film out test - so far noone it seems has tested this setup for blowup

Just watched "Domino" at lunch today....your stuff has the same feel i think, a little blown out? Without all of the blowing some dudes arm off....(just the part i saw at lunch)

Very nice work.

Definitely some killer footage there.

But why did you choose to do most of the color correction in post rather than in camera (ie: a really low master pedestal, not using cine-d, low saturation, etc.)?

I'm down loading the footage now... but the stills keep inspiring me... just sent an action script out to a bunch of investors... so in my mind when I see the film I wrote... some of your grabs pop into my head...

this footage sucks.....ultra kidding, love the feel, the comps, the coloring - very impressive presario - almost as impressive as your defiant stand at "The Battle of Cinematography.com". You catch a lot of shite over their my friend...stay strong!

Hey Zalutsky,

I've been extremely busy so I haven't been able to cut together a proper trailer but wanted to show what the moving pictures looked like. I'll put up a proper trailer after I finish my film :)

Also, I totally understand your point about shadows and highlights and how they are important but in the context of my film, I wasn't too concerned. The reason being, films that use ultra high contrast film stock blow highlights beyond belief and I did not want a flat, ultra smooth curve for my images. It's an inverse relationship. The more contrast you want, the less information you can retain in the shadows and highlights. Also, I shot in CineD which retains the most info in the shadows and highlights and adjusted the contrast and curves in post. That ensured that I retained the most information until I decided to discard it in CC. Good luck with your project amigo!

Thanks guys! Tony Scott is a big inspiration of mine and his hand crank/super saturated/high contrast/double exposed images look amazing and ultra stylish. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but he definitely is a trend setter and I hear CSI LV is utilizing his hand crank/double exposure method for their flashback sequences. Very cool.

Also, I would have liked to do all the effects in camera but I did not for 2 reasons:

1) I wanted to use CineD to get the widest dynamic range and then mess with the curves in post because I could achieve the same look as CineV with the option of going another route if the look did not suit the scene. Also, I know purists may have a problem with this method but it's like when I shoot with my DSLR. I shoot RAW then process the image in CS. If the option is available, why not take advantage of it? In the film days, things were done in camera to save time and money on post processing costs, etc and usually, they have to choose the visual style before they shoot in order to select the proper film stock. Yes, I did have a visual style in mind before I started shooting but I could have a change of heart later in post so that's why I shot with the flatest curve and adjusted the image in post. :) Sorry for the lengthy explanation.

2) Believe it or not, I wanted to dirty up my footage and CineD is a little more noisy than CineV in the shadows.

The lenses I used were owned by my camera op Alexander. They were, to the best of my knowledge:

Nikon 24 2.0, 35 2.0, 50 1.4, 85 1.4, 105 1.8, 80-200 2.8 (don't quote me on the aperture numbers).

HOpe that helps!
Andrew

all i will say ist hat you did it the right way, and you left yourslef with as many options as you needed.

wow this looks really good, very professional.

would love the see the full short when it's done.

Hey,
I just bought the HVX200 and the redrock M2. I've been doing a lot of different tests with lighting and motion etc. But I cannot get a good focus. I have tweaked the crap out of the back focus, played with the f-stop, done everything I can think of... But I cannot get a good consistend focus.
What lenses did you use? Did you find this problem? what can you tell me?

especially - its less about the lenses and more about the setup to get a sharp image - did you follow every step in the red rock tutorials? - missing just one step will ruin your image - you need to make sure you up down and side to side align and then perform the back focus fine tuning.

Hey this is great looking stuff indeed! look am new here. Could u tell me if you're planning to put this on big screen?
And are there any films out there shot on HVX which have been shown on big screen after going to 35mm.
Would be real nice if anyone could give me some links on this.
Sorry about being naive and stupid. In time I guess I'll learn from you guys.
Cheers

the trailer looks great! love the mood, the atmosphere... very nicely done! looking forward to seeing the film. It looks like Dennis Haybert's story in 'Heat'. Great score too.

Hey,

I checked this thread out awhile ago and was really interested in this film. What's happening with it? Can we get an up date?
