Slow Motion Music Video - Maths genius needed!

OK here's the deal. I am planning to practice shooting a music video to learn how to do one. I want to do a slow mo bit where the singers movement is slowed down to 75% but his lipsync with the music will be 100% accurate. Now how fast do I need to speed up his original piece of music for him to sing along to so that when I slow mo the footage to 75% everything matches? Any mathematical formula I can use?

Any suggestion will help!
Thanks!

100 / desired end result

in your case 100 / .75 = 133.33 .. 75% of 133.33 is 100 so when you slow it down that much it should match

FiddlerMD is correct. Panda, with what you suggested you'd end up with 83.333% -- close to the desired 80% but not quite accurate.

Use Soundforge software to increade tempo of your music to 133.33 percent from 100 percent. Then Shoot your music video using this track and in post production again u can manupulate speed to 75 and replace original track.

they did a similar thing on Weird Al Yancovic's "White and Nerdy" - the behind the scenes clip on youtube shows them doing the song slower then it actually is in the video so their motions look sped up

Try it yourself. take any song.If song is slow one its more effective.
Use any audio software to increade tempo of your music to 133.33 percent from 100 percent. Then Shoot with your DVX, sing yourself.Capture it and try it. If u r happy with results then go ahead with music video.

How will the lips slowed to 75% stay in sync with music at 100%? The music will blow by the lips almost immediately won't it?

i've tried this and it doesn't work for me.
Sped it up in Vegas, and slowed down the footage 75%.

Also, sometimes 133.33 can be too fast. Songs that are already too fast can be impossible to play at 133.33, especiallly for electric/bass guitarist. (unless they are extremely pro)

Guys... this is exactly how it's done in ANY video, including the pro vids you see on TV. Yes, it can be difficult to sing/play along with, but there's a catch to every trick, and this one is no exception.

And "Gary"... we're talking about speeding up music for use with playback on location. This means you'll sing/play FASTER than usual (think Alvin and the chipmunks) while shooting it, and then in post, you slow the footage down and you're perfectly in sync (hopefully) with the original song.

I remember the first time I tried this, and I also thought that to get to 80%, I'd just speed the music up to 120%! Should have thought that one out before hand ;) All worked out in the end, though. Just took a little time to find the right speed.

Listen to rcbrown23. You make a modified version of the song, playing faster than normal. The artist syncs with that fast version. The video is shot in an overcranking/slow-mo way. Then you take that video and marry it to an original version of the song, and it syncs up.

For working with a DVX don't go for 75% speed, go for 80%. Use 30P, and edit it on a 24p timeline. It'll give you crystal-clear perfect slow-mo.

So Barry, if im going for 80%, shooting 30p on the DVX and editing on a 24p timeline, what shloud be the optimal speed of the song?still 133.3%?

Its best to choose slow songs. for those kind of effect. Then also if u mail me your song(mp3 format) I will work out .

Barry,

any idea what speeds & settings to use with a PAL DVX100B ?? Obviously we only get 25P.. Would it work better at 50i?

Barry-
I know this has been beaten to death-

but if I wanted a few drastic cuts of more dramatic slow motion- (not lip syncing- just motion)
I am filming in 30p for the 80% effect-
but say I want some 40%- (and maybe I want some sped up to 125%) would that make the most sense on a 24p timeline (half speed gives 40% original speed)- or should I shoot for another % (this is in FCP) to minimize frame blending?

I could probably work this out on my own- but just wondering if you know off the top of your head (as you often do)

Scott

If you want really slow-mo, shoot 60i and then play that back at 40% speed. That'll give you a frame from each field, with no blending (although it will be softer because you'll be making each frame out of an individual field). But the motion can be glass smooth. It's easy to do in Vegas; I don't know how you'd accomplish it in FCP.
