HVX Music Video "Breathe Out"

For the most part it was really nice but their are a few shots I would pull out right away:
1- their are a couple of shots where the singer is walking around that look badly over exposed.
2- shadows covering singers face is a big no no.
3- too harsh a vignette at the start IMHO.

Over all very slick with fantastic lighting for the most part i'm just nit picking as ever.
Look forward to seeing more stuff Ryan.

I am not usually a fan of music videos, but this one is very good. There are some great shots, very tasteful editing, everything in this worked really well.

Congratulations!

Great looking video here. Your DP really made the HVX shine. This camera really lends itself to music video work. Would you mind posting a few low-light 720 or 1080 stills where that grain (noise) structure is most apparent?

damn shes fine.....

im not sure i get the point of the story?

this dude is with a girl, and he knows she sleeps around? does she know he knows?

confused a bit

I'm having trouble posting high rez stills on the site... it says the max size is 19.5kb. I figure if the pic is that small, not worth looking for grain on it.
Indeed we had grain in the low light spots. My DP was baffled about it when looking at our 17inch HD monitor on set. We lit everything pretty decently too, but couldn't do much about it in the end. Anyway, I think it works well and not that noticeable to the regular viewing eye.
We also shot the interior band shots with a +6db, because we were going for a gritty look anyway, and we also wanted to shoot with a faster shutter.

I thought I had an HD version posted? I used H.264... not good enough?

As for the overexposed shots of the singer outside, I'll see what I can do about them in post, but I think I shot them like that. That was me operating the outside stuff while the DP was busy setting up the next shot, and with all the lighting shifting outside, trying to ride my skateboard, hold the camera steady... I may have (over)blown it (no pun intended).

Thanks for all the comments! I shot another music video 2 days after this one, but have been too swamped to edit that one yet... but it's coming soon.

The story is about a guy who's with a girl, but everytime they are together, she seems distant or has more important things to do: The bedroom scene she checks the clock... The kitchen scene she answers the phone... He gets suspicious, so goes to her house, walks up the front, and sees in the window her with another dude. So he just splits. She is not aware of him outside the window. The song is sorta about that... "breathe out for me" like 'give me something', she's distant... and now we know why :-)
yeah... she's pretty hot. After every love scene take- ADAM: "I think we need to redo that take"

im getting into the pointless child horomonal obssessive question when i ask : Was she wearing nipple patches?

and was everyone on set wearing a jock strapp?

I personally liked he outside shots. Blown out works for this.

The shot i didnt like was the straight on shot of the entire band, where there was hard lighting, looked quite videoish, but the rest was beautifuly done.

I was told by our make-up girl that she would be wearing nipple patches... but... first take of that scene I was mistaken, she went for it sans patches

lucky guy. he must have had such blue balls after the shoot..

as woul;d the rest of the crew.

Gruzman,

I wasn't saying I saw problems in the mids, I was just saying that the video is lit nicely and that it might be interesting for you to post grabs or links to full-frame, full resolution grabs.

Because we shoot so much HVX, I'm accustomed to the grain (and I usually refer to it improperly as grain, instead of noise), but I think that anyone who has not already adopted the HVX into their productions might benefit from analyzing some larger images where the grain can be better scrutinized.

Can you share with us your settings.

I thought the video was cool. I didnt see any grain. How did you accomplish this?

HD is defined by the resolution of the frame, not the codec used. H.264 is great - but you could encode a webcam stream in H.264 if you wanted. :) Don't get me wrong - I think the video looks great! That's why I want to see the full (720?) version, because that's the only way you can effectively judge the picture from the HVX. The version you posted is 533x300 (which is smaller than SD). A that size, the total area of the image was shrunken by more than 500% from the original - and of course things like noise and artifacting are going to be significantly reduced because of it. So, my question is more technical than anything... I'm just curious to see the original HVX output. There's no question that SD finishes from the HVX look great, but SD wasn't the reason we all got the HVX to begin with right?

Wow, very sweet.. Great edit, great song, and visually entertaining!
Great use of varied shutter angles..
The "bright" walking shots of the artist as said before look a bit "videoish". The over exposure tends to do that.. Towards the end when the SUV drives by, then you pan to the artist, that shot was perfectly exposed (pola I'm guessing).. For the future, set your zebras the 85% and don't let the sky blow much past that.. use fill to get your artist nicely lit..

Otherwise AMAZING.. Keep up the GREAT WORK!

Nice work, man! I disagree with the previous "overexposure" and "shadow" comments. Uhhh... ever hear of style? And declaring a "no no" in the world of Music Videos? Are you for real? You better be Mark Romanek or Spike Jonze, to be throwin that kinda talk.

I thought it was well shot, well cut, and damn... amazing what you managed to pull out of the HVX. Kick ass, man.

Though I have to say, that lead singer guy needs to shave that ratty little goat tee off. Might have been able to keep his girl. She probably just didn't like it. SoCal chicks... :-)

Thanks again for all the great comments everybody.
My setting for the video were basically all stock. Just used F5 setting, shot frame rates of 48 and 60 (including the outside walking stuff), jumped all over the place with shutter speed, from walking outside being 1000, to the band scene being 250, to the kitchen and bedroom being 48 (going off memory).
For the band scene, the servo was off, and was constantly adjusting focus and zoom length... even if just moving the zoom a millimeter back and forth, gives a lively effect, which felt right for the tune.
I had the Panasonic BT-LH1700W monitor for production, so I was able to adjust focus and see everything in HD while shooting, which helped tremendously.

I'm crunching a 720 H.264 version of the video, and will hopefully post that soon, so ya'll can take a closer look if you like. I'll post the link when it's ready...
