Barry Training DVD Question - V Detail Freq

Barry,

I bought your DVD this week and have been watching it. So far it's been extremely helpful. Thank you for creating it. I'm only through the first section and it was already worth the purchase cost.

I have a question regarding the V Detail Freq setting you have been talking about when shooting SD at 30p or 24p. You mentioned that if you set it to "thin" then you will get a higher resolution image at SD with the sacrifice of possible flickering on NTSC interlaced monitors.

If your final output might be viewed on an interlaced TV, BUT only from an MPEG-2 compressed DVD, is it possible that through the process of compressing to MPEG-2 that enough of the extra resolution might be softened a bit (because of the compression) to end up minimizing the flickering effect on interlaced monitors in the end? The result being a sharper looking image on DVD because of using the "thin" setting, but not with enough flickering to bother the average viewer.

Thanks for your thoughts on this...

No, because MPEG doesn't in and of itself mean that the image will be softer. For example, if you took a still photo and put that on your timeline, and then exported that to DVD, a still image will probably retain 100% resolution, and may flicker quite madly on the interlaced TV.

MPEG goes soft when there's a lot of change in the image, but if the image is changing so much it's very unlikely that anyone would see the interline twitter anyway. Where you really notice the flicker/twitter is on static shots, and in those cases that's where MPEG would excel at retaining detail.

So, nice idea, but it's not gonna work like that.
