HVX200 vs DVX100B in Standard Definition

Hello Dvx community,

I do not yet have a computer that is capable of editing HD. I know a few folks who will let me use their beefy machines now and again if I desperately need Hi-def in a project, but since I mostly shoot skits and documentaries, SD will do.

So why not just get the DVX100B? Well, HD is the future right? Or so I keep hearing. Longevity is my main concern as eventually I would have my dream machine (Quad core is coming!) and it would be 720p indefinitely.

In the meantime, can anybody state with conviction that the HVX is significantly better than the DVX at shooting SD? And if so, would you know if P2 cards retain better/more data over Mini-DV tapes? I have read two threads that have said the HVX is a lot better at SD, but it could be a case of only seeing what one wants to see. (Sorry for all that rhyming at the end, I am a poet!)

As always, any feedback is appreciated.

DVCPro50 is SD, and it is far superior in quality to DV25. But, you will need P2 media and an editing solution that can handle MXF files.

As far as 480i DV25 (MiniDV) is concerned, the consensus is that the DVX is better at it than the HVX. It's also one stop more light-sensitive, albeit a little bit more noisy.

Under adequate lighting conditions, the HVX is better than the DVX on a number of fronts. It's native 16:9, it's sharper, it has a better lens, wider wide-angle, more telephoto, etc. HVX also appears to offer about 1 stop more dynamic range.

The DVX does have some advantages though: in progressive mode it's a stop faster than the HVX, and in interlaced mode it's two stops faster! And the HVX in 480/60i has some aliasing issues that don't look too good; it looks great in 30p or 24p but in 60i I'd rather use the DVX.
