Denied Barry's book by Panasonic

Does anyone make Organic Twinkies?

Good thing this was figured out. I'm sure the guy at B and H that made this mix up might be in a wee bit of trouble...

congrats on getting a new one.

I think its funny how so many are calling this simply a "mix up." Why so staunchly stick up for a place that so obviously jacks up the price just due to the authorized status? This alone is a dirty trick. They don't even try to be competitive with their cams. Are any of you really all that surprised that they started sneaking in greys?

I got a great deal on a Bogen 503 & sticks from B&H, but nothing beats my newegg'd $2800 after rebate USA 100B.

edit: I just noticed this is the HVX forum... *ducks*

Right Barry, B&H has a long history which deserves to be taken in consideration. But they truly screwed up this time.
In the end we can post and rant here as much as we want, but if Panasonic don't participate in the solution things will hardly change.
It's clear and without any doubts at this point they've been 'dumping' grey market products for full US warranty prices.
That is NOT an Authorized Dealer standard.

What makes you think they're not actively pimp-slapping B&H right now? Jan already said she was going to sort it out.

from my conversations with jan i truly believe that she is going to address this issue with B&H and al those involved at Panasonic. She was quite annoyed [to put mildy] when i was informing her of what my situation was.

Go get'em jan

Good to hear all this inside info on the subject.

It seems we'll be looking at some solution/repercussion pretty soon...

And of course NewEgg is also selling gray-market cameras -- they are not an authorized Panasonic broadcast equipment dealer.

Regarding ealier complaints about legalizing the gray market: if that hadn't been done, many people (possibly the same ones complaining about the gray market) would be complaining about corporate monopolies and price gouging. You can't have it both ways, folks.

I hear ya, but I still think B&H jacks up the price unfairly just because of the authorized dealer tag. I'm not trying to undermine that, I know what it means.

I didn't know newegg was dealing greys, but I'm not surprised. Do what I did - follow up follow up follow up, even before your order is shipped. Have them note the account that if it's not USA, it'll come right back to them. Those few phonecalls & emails are worth 500 bucks, right?

EVS suckas!!!

but really it's scary to think B&H is not fully reliable. I've spent several hundred if not thousands with them and haven't run into any snags. It seems like in this day and age, you can't trust anyone with your money.

E-mail me.
We bought several new cameras from another authorized retailer and were assured they were "kosher." Apparently some were not. If you can provide the order details I will see what is what.

I am very willing to grant that B&H was sucker-punched by another dealer or that serial numbers may not fully have been checked. In our tradition, this is the time of year to accept any plea for forgiveness offered by another person, and I for one take Henry Posner's explanation and apologies at face value.. I personally never miss an opportunity to go to B&H when in NY-- even if I'm not buying anything. It is the only place on earth where I can combine my video/photographic/electronics passions with my Talmudic training! But seriously, I do think it is time to let the whole thing go and allow B&H to fix a problem that the company may even have caused by negligence. This is not a boiler-room Brooklyn rip-off joint; it is a very big company which, like any other company, has the potential for making a mistake. In many situations, you sometimes have to climb the ladder in order to rectify those mistakes.

We truly feel that B & H has been and is a valued dealer in the video industry and this will all be righted shortly.
Best,
Jan
Thank you. I am as interested as Jan in seeing this resolved to the customer's 100% satisfaction.

You know you are right, and I have been remembering when it happened incorrectly. Thanks for that. I know it wasn't Jimmy Carter. I was just remembering where I was when it happened and had forgotten. It was Ronald Reagan, but you are right it was in the early 80's.

Best,

Jan
http://www.supnik.com/parallel.htm is chock full of info about grey market's origins in the USA.

DON'T BUY A USED CAMERA FROM B&H.

I just purchased a used HVX from them (our second one) and probably got raw911's returned camera. The thing was all in japanese!!! I have also bought a TON of stuff from them and I was VERY anoyed that they didn't indicate on their website or on the phone that these used cameras are all the japanese rejects that people in this threat are returning to them.

So anyway I refused to get a new one from them and asked for my money back. I am now buying it from specialized communications. I hope I don't get screwed by them too as I already sent in a bank check to get the additional 2% discount.

By the way, B&H made me pay return shipping and I am sure they will not reimburse me for the original shipping. I am losing close to 100 bucks for their non-disclosure. I could KILL!!!

EDIT: I am so pissed that I think I'll start a whole new topic about B&H.

Add me to the list... I purchased my camera USED from B&H three weeks ago. When it arrived it looked brand new.... manual on the inside was in Japanese and the warranty card was in Japanese... an English manual was taped onto the outside of the package. The serial number is H6NC00002 R . These used cameras are not listed as grey market cameras. I signed up for Barry Green's book but have not received it or a notification saying I have a grey market camera. I'm figuring these cameras were directly imported from Japan and B&H is selling these cameras as USED without informing the buyer that they are grey market. My camera was priced at $4,995.00 and now the USED cameras are priced at $4,895.00. Perhaps they dropped the price to entice even more people to purchase grey market cameras used.

I would like to know for how long does Panasonic warranty US HVX200 cameras. Should I take the risk and wait for the warranty period to expire and pray nothing happens?

DO NOT PURCHASE USED HVX200'S FROM B&H.

Hi,

The Warranty is one year parts and labor. Unfortunately since this is a gray market camera there will be no book issued.

You can always call them and negotiate to a higher priced US model.

Best,

Jan

Can I send my grey market camera into Panasonic for it to be repaired?
