My first muzzle flash effect, just a single frame but it looks cool when played

looks great,

but I do find the explosion a bit big for the gun.
and shouldnt there be exposed light on her hands and face since the light is that strong?

Unless, all the other frames are dark and this is the brightest one.

I cant say for sure unless I see the full movie.

The explosion is big...too big for a 9mm pistol...but it shows for 1 frame so its hardly noticeable.

The glow from the gigantic flame pistol is reproduced...her face and surroundings are alot darker...

Thx for the comments

Looks pretty good. Did you make this from scratch or this a resource from a stock shot (like from Detonation Films or videocopilot.net).

I want to see the footage... this looks good, man. a little big... but kickass nonetheless. I also want to know where you found it! (or how you made it!)

Made it from scratch.

After Effects....

The muzzle effect looks good (maybe a little drastic for a glock), but the lighting could use a little reorganizing. You can clearly see that the subject was lit from the left on to the wall (the shadow), and with a mussel flash like that, you want it to light up the subjects face and whatever is around the muzzle in a 2 - 5 foot range. I'd try softening the light or bouncing it. I'm pretty sure this is just a test shot and thought I'd point that out. Nice job on the effect, and your reel. :)

I lightened up that frame alot with a diffused orange glow/mask. But after rendering it to a MOV file, I think some of it is lost. Might have to stretch it over 2 frames to get the full effect...thx for the comments.

Thx IF....

Now that I see some footage it does look really good but I think it may be a little transparent or this perhaps a compression thing. Maybe you could do two layers (tracks) with one being a little smaller and closer to the barrel but making it feel more solid but this would still give you a little bit of a blend for the rest of it... Just a thought.

PS. Good to see another San Diego Film Maker on Here also.

Thx for the comment. I know im having compression issues....need to work that out tonight.

I think it could be a lot better...
First of all, the actresses performance is very stiff, making the recoil look fake. The key to selling the performance of a gun shot recoil in all in the flinch - not necessariliy in the hand movement. People are always watching the eyes.
Second, as stated earlier, the flash is too big.
Another thing that it lacks is smoke, or some sort of projectile trail. The one frame flash isn't enough to make us believe something actually came from the barrel of that gun.

Here are two links from different films I've done that have a gun shot in them.
The first is simulated. It was the first time I ever attempted to create a flash effect in post. I did it frame by frame in photoshop, where I painted the flash into the video. While it looks cool, this is where I learned the "flinching rule" I stated above. The hand gesture isn't enough to sell the shot.
Watch it here

In this clip, we actually used a starter pistol that fired 22mm blanks. Belive me when I say, that this is the way to go. The gun was $20. Use it as a reference though the next time you drop in a digital flash. Notice how much more smoke that fire their actially is.
