Hi, just finished a short school project shot on a HVX-200. It was put together rather quickly, but was fun to make. Let me know what you think.

This link has the "you tube" version..
***REMOVED DUE TO CRAPPY QUALITY*** the link below works fine.

This link is to the 55MB quicktime file...
Click on "download this file now" and the next screen will have the d/l link...

Enjoy!

To start off with...YOUTUBE is crap when it comes to compression quality. You should probably find a real server.

Next, your film was very much a cliche. There was nothing original or new. Every kid in school is making pretty much the same thing. I recommend a new idea.

Dont mean to be harsh...just my observations.

Keep on making movies...but try and get original.

I would recommend looking at this site:

I'm happy that you figured out a way to make a head explode, but that isn't enough reason to make a film, and doing it twice doesn't help.

This is all style and no substance.

Keep trying but next time, make a film about something in your life. Make a statement. Tell a story. Make it worth my time to watch what you've struggled to make.

Sorry to be harsh, I think you have some skills but they are wasted on efforts like this.

I second these guys.. you're just 'wanking' with a story like this. Wake up and make a real story that makes you feel something instead of something you and the guys you made this with can snigger over.
That aside, the little crane move on the incoming car was cool.

Thaks for the input.
There is no story in this short, and it was supposed to be a cliche. If you are looking for a great story, look elsewhere. This is a short experimental piece mainly used to hone my skills with the hvx, after effects and delivery of a finished product - all at a tight deadline.
Next time I'll post a disclaimer so people don't get too serous on me.

Looked pretty damn good dude.. Nice comps, good use of existing light..(pola?) Some nice slowmo.. Some a bit to long.. Nice steady boom up on the car, and nice use of the foreground in that shot as well..

How did you do the head thing if you don't mind me asking?

ALSO

Always tell people what your looking for.. Otherwise they will give you the good, the bad and the kitchen sink.. That's what this group is for.. It seems as though lately people just post here and expect people to have orgasmic reactions on what they think was good... This is a forum for people to learn.. Not a place for a pat on the back, and a job well done.. (unless it deserves it of course, like everything I do..)

;-)

keep up the nice shooting, and ENJOY your HVX, it's going to take us all places.......

Hi Justin, the head explosion was done in after effects, thanks to a great tutorial by Andrew Kramer at http://www.videocopilot.net/
Most outdoor shots used a cir. polarizer and for the car shot I used a Kessler crane. There was a bit much of the slo mo, but I'm sure many hvx users get excited about that feature and tend to over do it. Less is more! Next time!

Take care!

robot909...

Why waste your time with cliches? If you are trying to hone your skills...I think it would behove you to do so with an original thought and or idea. In doing so, you will get two for the price of one - 1) Great demo of your skills and 2) Great demo of your writing/directing.

My original thought still stands. This piece was wanker! Showcase your skills with a good idea and the sky with be the limit.

All the best,

CHE

Exploding Heads!

Exploding Heads!

Hey, nice exploding heads, esp. the first one where it was obscured in darkness.

I agree that it was cliche and that the slow mo was too long etc. etc.

But I won't presume to go about telling you what you should or shouldn't practice. Damn, I shot my teddy bears having a knife duel just to try things out. Glad I didn't post that here.

Keep going. The key is being able to recognize your shortcomings so you can build on your skill set. If that fails, explode more heads.:zombie_smiley:

Hey Bro, don't talk about my piece like that...What you got???
That kind of talk will get you in trouble. Its one thing to voice your "opinion" but its not cool to take it to this level. I'd bet you would not say that to my face...

You got anything to say to me, PM me.

And thanks for all the other comments, I will hire a writer next time! :dankk2:

damn dude, why are you getting so offended? if you didn't want to hear what they had to say about it, then you shouldn't have posted it. maybe you should have just showed it to your family or friends, or maybe those shitty actors. then they could tell you how marvelous your film was, and you wouldn't have to worry about any honest opinions.

and another thing...I really don't think that a guy with Che Guevara as a user name is going to be scared of you because of some ridiculous message...lol (seriously)

since when was this a competition? and if you must know "what I got", how about winning best local film last weekend at the Shockerfest Film Festival (actually, I was DP). I don't think it was exploding heads, no plot, and over usage of overcranking that won us the award. And BTW, it wasn't even shot on the HVX, or in HD for that matter. And I guarantee that there are hundreds of users on this site that have accomplished way more than that, and they don't use it to fight with one another. So just calm the f uck down, and write a script that is actually interesting, instead of defending one that isn't. My two cents :2vrolijk_08:

just watched the whole thing. In the way of the script: why show the head being blown off at first? You give away the ending of the plot for no real reason. Not that there is any plot to speak of.

In the way of the cinematography, there is too much head room in most of the shots and it's very flat. No depth to speak of. The silhouette of the 'boss' was ridiculious.

In the way of the acting. When the guy pulls out the gun, the bald dude doesnt even seem to care. And the 'killer' scratching his head with his gun, that's just amazing. Straight out of Ed Wood. In the future, you need to focus on your reality. If the audience doesn't believe it then what's the point? Draw the audience in through acting and plot. Suspend our disbelief.
This may seem harsh but it's a lesson you need to learn if you really want to make a film that people will enjoy.

OK. Everyone cool out. Put down your keyboards and back away slowly. NOW! Before this gets ugly.

Oh, wait, I'm not a moderator ... damn, I should be.

Uh, carry on ...

I didnt really mean to insult you or your work. I think we may have a different definition of wanker. I wasnt using the term as an insult...but more of a "get real."

Anyway, concerning your threats...calm down. If you cant take criticism, you are going into the wrong profession. It really sucks when people come into filmmaking with all the answers and will not take any advice or input. Get a reality check and lose the attitude. Remember, you get more flies with honey than vinagar.

Oh yeah...my last short placed in the top 10 for the Tribecca/American Express On-line Film Festival. As a prize, I won a 60GB video I-Pod.

Take care...keep tyring....tell a story.

Best of luck.
