Computer Image looks ugly, TV image looks perfect

I captured some dvx100 footage, and it looks great on TV, highly saturated with perfect colors. However, when i captured it through AVID, the image looks like crap. Its very grainy, looks like a crappy camcorder image. Though when i preview it with an extrenal monitor, it looks perfect. What is going on?

I want to render this as a video file so i can send it to my friends, but it looks horrible on the computer screen. i tried searching for similar topics, but cant' find any.

on the TV it looks more saturated, sharp, more of a commercial-feel look to it. when i'm viewing it being captured on my computer monitor, it looks very grainy, less color to it, and just looks crappy.

Sounds like your TV boosts the saturation quite a bit. Try doing that in your NLE. Color correction is the way to go here :)

CRT TV has more saturation, more contrast, looks good. Computer screen tends to show what there REALLY IS: DV is in reality rather low quality medium...

I have found this too. On a TV for meeverything looks smooth and vibrant, and depending on the LCD computer monitor the image can look soft and grainy. The best thing to do is to calibrate a TV or CRT Reference Monitor and use that as the source of judgement for the quality of your videos. Also, remeber DV is only 720x480, if you view it at a higher resolution it will not look as sharp.

The final word on what your footage looks like is by using a calibrated production monitor. Short of that, a calibrated TV set. Your monitor also needs to be calibrated to standards. Sounds like they both may be a bit out of whack. Don't trust em until you get them calibrated.

Your computer monitor has a much higher resolution than your television monitor. miniDV has a resolution of 720x480, which is very close to the native resolution of standard defintion television, but it would display natively on most computer monitors as a small box floating in the middle of the screen (an average monitor resolution being 1020x768 or similar). If you scale your 720x480 miniDV video up to fill your computer monitor you are, in effect, simply enlarging all the pixels of your source video and, as a result, you're going to get a soft, murky, grainy image.
Add to this the fact that miniDV has a compression ratio of 5:1 and you're even more likely to be unhappy with a scaled-up image.

Ditto. I was just going to say the same thing as qxz.

Another thing to remember is that the Pixels on a monitor are discrete little boxes, whereas on TV the "dots" are much more fluid, and blurry. Hence, a moniter tends to show grain much more, and even the jaggies are more evident. On television these are toned down.

Try viewing your video without enlarging it. It should look much more similar (if not the same) to how it appears on a TV.
