The Execution of Captain Villalobos (short film)

Nice. I actually watched the entire thing, and I very rarely get through entire shorts of this nature. There were definitely some great shots and camera angles in there. Not so sure about the plot, but it was a well executed short. Music fit pretty well; a little over the top at some time's, but it kind of fit into the scheme of things.Too bad it's on youtube, though... the compression is so bad I can't really comment on the footage itself, but from what I saw, it could really use some color correcting.

How did you do those transitions? the one's near the begining when introducing people, where the camera panned off from one person to the other very fast. Also when the security guy picked up his phone, and it quickly zoomed in on it.

Nice job. Give it a little time, and you'll get more comments. Mine should get the ball rolling.

I think the camera framing is very good, as well as the pace for the most part, but some scenes are tad too long. Also the presentation of the swimmers is a bit much without anything in between. Also the voice over is a bit juvenile. But most important I got into it, and enjoyed watching the whole thing as well. It's a very nice movie.

i agree, i thought the swimming pool introduction ran a bit too long. why are we introduced to all these characters and then they dont do anything? Perhaps if they took part in his capture, it would have been a little more justified.

Also, It's one thing to borrow ideas and shots from QT - i mean, that's how we learn...we imitate. But using the soundtrack form his movies and even the Super Sounds of The Seventies is kind of pushing it - especially in terms of copyright infringement.

Yeah, I know what you mean. We're planning to add a different soundtrack as soon as we get garage band (next month) so we can put it in a few local festivals. Perhaps we will also cut out the other swimmers before we submit it. (The K-Billy thing is a bit much, could you guys recommend something else?)

PS: The pan & zooms were fairly simple. We filmed the shots of the actor as a still shot, we then filmed the fast pan (over the pool), and we filmed the next shot of the other actor. In vegas I used a horizontal blur on the pan and sped it up, then I linked it between the two clips of the actors with pushs transitions (I just blurred the transition to make it smoother). The zoom was two separate shots (far, and close up of hand) on the far shot we used a zoom cross effect transition (transitioning into nothing so it would only maintain the zoom) on a lower video track we added the closeup of the hand (trying to match it up with the zoom) and had the lightray effect quickly crossfading to the original close up.

I think the movie is cool. The only thing that I didn't like was the audio, specially the voices.

g.

Yeah, I don't like the audio as well. I think you should fire the lolly pop licking kid that wrote those lap swimmer's bios. He's a stain in the underpants of PyroFilms. Great movie though.

From a technical standpoint, I must say that you have a tightly knit short film. You have some interesting shots that you should be proud of. The only thing really was some audio was a little distracting (don't worry, it happens to everyone). Also, it was a bit derivative of every Tarantino film I've ever seen. I can see that is one common comment that you're getting, all in all it was good. Another thing, before you enter festivals, keep in mind that you need permission to use music or any audio that has a copyright.

Yeah. I need to get some new soundtracks and some royalty free music. But it's difficult to find good stuff.

I thought the film was pretty entertaining-I love the scene with the kid drowning in the background as the main character walks by him.

My only problem with the short was that his mark seemed too young to be a major gangster. He could be the son of a major gangster though. A son poised to eventually take over the criminal family business. The way you structured your film that is something you could easily adjust with your voice-over when you introduce the character.

Anyways, that's my only quibble. Once you pick some original music for your soundtrack, I think you'll have a winner. (note: I thought it was kinda funny you used "My Sharona" on the scene where the hitman is tied up, considering that was the song Quentin T originally wanted to use during the sodomy scene in Pulp Fiction).

well, I watched the whole thing, the fact you kept me infront of my screen for 10 minutes to watch is good. most stuff cant do that. techincally it was nice, I mean I dont think it was shot fabulously, and the lighiting certeintly could have been better. But it cut together smoothly and worked and thats a big achievment I think most of the stuff Ive dont so far lacks that. but the story it self was like ummm what?. the whole time im waiting for some excplanation of why this is taking place at a swimming pool and it never came. it just was too random. and yea the tarintino stuff ahaha w/e...everyone does it the man has done some amazing things.

haha yeah I dont know what anyone is talking about.
I think tarantino has taken what he like from movies of the past and puts his own spin on it.
I think you have just taken from a tarantino movie and not put your own spin on it.
Why do you have a shot of the lisence plate, why do u dolly into this shot?
Why are all the swimmers who are criminals in the pool together?
Why do they all look like senior citizens? I seriously thought this was a joke.
I stoped watching about half way into the introductions.
the reason is because nothing happend
how can you expect people to watch something where nothing happens
there is no incadent that effects or show simehting about the protagonist that says soemthing about the cherecter.
And i can hear the narator poping pimples in the backround. He sounds like a geeeeeekk. sory if that is you.

tarantino has the ability to show great storys with little resouces. If you wan to do soemthing that has to do with a pool where criminals hang out. Put all th criminals in a car on a way to arms deal then have the car crash. The criminals have to fool the police that the car is not theirs so they jump into the pool with all the money or the guns. All the while they are talking about, who they would rather have sex with operah or rosie odanald. And have some poor guy bleeding like **** in the back of the car. There would be something intresting. Focus on the story first ppplllleeeassee
