HVX + Letus Flip Tests- Stills & Clips-

235 Studios

So, after reading about Jacks use of the Letus35a on the HVX (The M2 was not working), that got me thinking- I've got a LetusFlip sitting around, why not throw that bad boy on and play with it. I'm currently debating between getting the M2 or the Brevis- but, thought I would try this out, seeing as how I already have it.

The links are below- these are just quick setups, ment for looking at the footage, as well as various camera settings. Nothing exciting as far as content- just the inside of my garage. But I thought I would off them up for you all to view and evaluate for yourselves.

That doesn't look too bad at all. Most of the other letus stuff I've seen has looked very bad compared to the m2 and brevis. How does it look to you at full res?

The Stills are full 1080pA if you want to check them out- overall the LetusFlip is preforming better then I had thought that it would. I know that the M2 and the Brevis were designed for use with HD, while the LetusFlip was not- so I just assumed that it would not work as well. But with this test it seems to be doing ok. It would be nice to have all the adapters to do a side by side comparison .....

so long as the Achromt hold up the resolution the 35adpater you use shouldnt matter. especially if its a moving GG.

beautiful - now i want an hvx and an adapter... hey, 235 Studios, if you are looking to sell your letus, pm me! although it looks very nice... still, if you are interested... yeah. i have a dvx and have wanted a letus flip for some time now. now all i need is a lens.

Thanks for posting this. I've used the Letus35a on the DVX a few times and for the first time I'm going to use it on the HVX come the first weekend in Nov.

Can you post the zoom and focus settings for your HVX?

That makes sense- and it is also part of the reason I thought that the LetusFlip would not hold up- as the M2 & the Brevis sell their achromat for about $400- which is almost the entire cost for the Flip ($700)- I figured that the flip would not have used an achromat that would be suitable for HD. I'll be doing more testing ...

No problem- hopefully it is usefull to you.

The setting are below, but I am using a letusFLIP, not the Letus35a, so you settings will probably be different. With the 35a- you will have less of a light loss problem, as the FLIP loses a lot of light.

For the HVX & Letus Flip (Attached with a stepdown ring)
Z = 26.0mm
MF = 15.0ft

How much light do you lose with the Flip? It does seem dark even at f1.4

How much light were you using?

Thanks

The f1.4 is the maximum aperature that that Canon Lens would open to- and it seemed fine to me as well. Speaking from pure observation, and not having done reliable / "scientific" testing I would say that the LetusFlip loses about 2 stops of light, or an additional 1 stop over the Letus35a. (I would need to do accurate testing to validate, or invalidate that claim though.)

Whatever the light loss, the Letus35a looses some light over the stcok lens, and the Letus Flip looses more light then the Letus35a.

Surprisingly enough, not very much. I thought that I would have to add in more light, but this setup seemed to be just fine. I used a 500w Lowell V-Light as the key, and the back light was a 250w lowell prolight with a blue gell on it.

Thanks! the iris of the camera was complety open? You're right that's not much light. Thanks again, I won'0t be using the Letus but I'm considering a using a Movietube this netx week and loses about 2 stops also.

I'll have a day with the camera and adapter so I can work the kinks out of the setup. I hope that is enough time! The stepdown ring is 82mm->72mm is that correct?

In your first post you wrote "So, after reading about Jacks use of the Letus35a on the HVX" so I searched all over looking for that thread thinking it would be full of useful information. Do you happen to know the address?

Thanks!!

No, the canon lens was completely open- it was at f1.4, which is as wide as the canon lens goes. The HVX lens was at f2.4. (I could hav egone all the way open on the HVX, but I wanted to retain as much resoilution as possible. (at full open the HVX loses some resolution.) Sorry for the confusion.

No problem- sorry I couln't point you to a specific page - yes there are a ton of them ... if it helps any is should be either near the begining or the end (First 8 - 10 / Last 8 - 10)- I don't remember which ....

Thanks for the tests. It seems very hard to find footage with the Letus35 Flip and the HVX200. Everybody swears by the M2, but the LetusHD100 and LetusXL for the HD JVC and Canon cameras seem to have the same optics as the Letus35 Flip Enhanced.

Were you using the Flip Enhanced or the regular Flip?

Glad to help out. I know everybody swears by the M2- which is why I wanted to test out the Letus. Those clips where shot with the Letus Flip Enhanced. I recently did buy the M2, and I will be doing a side by side comparison after I get done with principle photography for my entery for the DVX drama fest. So sometime in Feb. I'll post more clips & tests featuring both adapters.
