This is the first trailer made available for a Firefly fan show being shot here in Vancouver, Canada. It's mostly a work of love for the members. The actors aren't real actors. There are only three people with any experience in film. One is an AD, who plays the Captain. The second is the doctor, who does props and is directing this show. Third, I'm a Greensman on film sets, and I'm DP on this show.
It's a really fun show to work on, as it was pretty much my first gig cinematograpy-wise besides fun things I've done myself. It was my first time to apply practical knowledge such as framing, axis of action, etc. as I had read about it but never had a chance to apply it.
The lighting in the sets is a little flat at times, but I'm trying my best to work about it with what I can, as there lights are roof mounted and pretty basic. We could definitely have used a backlight or kicker to make them stand out against the background a bit more but we don't actually have an proper lighting equipment. I am receiving my first two 650s in the mail this week, I'm good and stoked. I handle all the camera work personally, and while the director has ideas for some shots, he pretty much gives me creative control over the shots and movement. I'm shooting handheld with no stabilizer or tripod at any times.
This trailer was not edited by me, so feel free to nitpick at will. Our editor received all our footage and was rushed to make this in under 2 days. The final product will probably have a different look to it after color-correction, etc. I'm not a big fan of the trailer personally but I thought it would be great to get some input and see what everyone thinks. There are a few video glitches in there also. The sound FX are pretty weak, which will definitely be getting fixed. The editor could've picked some nicer shots too, but there wasn't enough time to sit down and go through it with him.
