Do I need 2gb Ram for HD Editing in FCP?

I was hoping someone could help me out here. I have no issues with importing my P2 into my powerbook, or vieiwing the P2 video in FCP or in Quicktime. However, when I go and do an edit of my P2 HD Footage (of 720 24p) in FCP, and when I close my project, then go to re-open it, my FCP crashes. Everytime. I've tested out and edited my P2 footage on a G5 and it works fine with no problems when I go to re-open my projects on there.

I've tried everything from dumping my prefs, reformatting my hard drive, trying to edit from an external hard-drive with 800 firewire, re-installing my FCP, and trying other people's FCP 5.1.1 as well on my computer.

My Quicktime 7.1.1 also stalls/skips when playing 1280 X 720 H.264 footage as well.

Am I correct in coming to the conclusion that I need 2mb of Ram to play and even edit this footage without my computer stalling/FCP crashing?

I'm currently running with 1.5gb of DDR2 SDRAM. I also have a 1.67ghz processor, which I believe is more than enough from what I've read. And also 80gbs of ram.

If someone could help me out here, or had similair problems to what I'm having and could give me some advice that would be great! Thanks!

I have a dual 1.8 G5 and a couple of external G drives.

I haven't had any problems BUT I have added another 512 to bring RAM up to 2GB.

Not sure if the difference between 1.5 and 2 will be huge. I know that i certainly have issues trying to play full rez 720 with just 1 gig which is why I've ordered another. Most people tell me that 2 gigs is reccommended when doing HD.

I'd say 2gig minimum. 4gigs would be ideal. Then again it all depends on what else you do. If it's just for editing in FCP 2gigs should be fine. The basic rule of thumbs in video is the bigger the faster the better. There's no machine too powerful for video work. :D

The Mac Pro will let you cram 16G of RAM in there. I imagine that would have you covered. Probably broke also.

Theoretically 128gigs I think. It's just that they don't have 16gig RAM sticks yet. :D

I have 6.5 GB of ram for my final cut system... I would say 4-5 is the magic number.. anything above that doesn't help as much
